If it be the <em> Alashya<\/em> of the Tell-el-Amarna Letters (cp. Flinders Petrie, <em> Syria and Egypt<\/em>, p. 161), it may be <em> Cyprus<\/em> or <em> some part of Cyprus<\/em>; cp. note on <em> Kittim<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em> Tarshish<\/em> ] Probably Tarsus in Cilicia is meant, for the next people mentioned are its near neighbours, the Kittim, i.e. the inhabitants of Cyprus. Tarsus was early colonised by the Greeks and was the capital of the country as early as the close of the fifth century b.c. It is to be distinguished from the Tarshish (= Tartessus in the south of Spain) of <span class='bible'>Eze 27:12<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em> Kittim<\/em> ] spelt in A.V. <em> Chittim<\/em> (R.V. <em> Kittim<\/em>) in <span class='bible'>Num 24:24<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Isa 23:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Isa 23:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jer 2:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eze 27:6<\/span>, and <span class='bible'>Dan 11:30<\/span>. The inhabitants of Cyprus are meant, and &ldquo;Kittim may be a reminiscence of Citium, the name of one of its oldest towns. In later times Kittim&rdquo; (Chittim) is used vaguely of Western nations; &ldquo;the ships of Kittim&rdquo; (<span class='bible'>Dan 11:30<\/span>) are the Roman ships; &ldquo;the land of Chittim&rdquo; (  , 1M<span class='bible'>a 1:1<\/span>) is Macedonia ( <em> ib.<\/em> 1Ma 8:5 ).<\/p>\n<p><em> Dodanim<\/em> ] R.V. <strong> Rodanim<\/strong>, so Heb. and LXX. (  ). In the A.V. the spelling is made to agree with that of <span class='bible'>Gen 10:4<\/span>, where, however, the LXX. has again  . No doubt the Rhodians are meant; their island was celebrated even in the days of Homer.
