The royal line naturally takes precedence of the other two. <span class='bible'>Rth. 4:18-22<\/span> gives this line from Pharez to David. (Compare the genealogies of Christ, <span class='bible'>Matthew 1<\/span> and <span class='bible'>Luke 3<\/span>) Nahshon is called chief of Judah in Num. ii 3 (comp. <span class='bible'>1Ch. 1:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ch. 7:12<\/span>), at the time of the Exodus.<\/p>\n<p>(11) <strong>Salma.<\/strong>So in <span class='bible'>Rth. 4:20<\/span>; but in <span class='bible'>1Ch. 2:21<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Mat. 1:4<\/span>, and <span class='bible'>Luk. 3:32<\/span>, Salmon.<\/p>\n<p>(13-17) The family of Jesse (Heb., <em>Yishai<\/em> in <span class='bible'>1Ch. 2:12<\/span>, but <em>Ishai<\/em> in <span class='bible'>1Ch. 2:13<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Seven sons are here named. <span class='bible'>1Sa. 17:12-13<\/span> states that Jesse had eight sons; and from <span class='bible'>1Sa. 16:6-10<\/span> (Heb.) it appears that he had that number. In both passages, Eliab, Abinadab, and Shimma (Heb., <em>Shim,<\/em> here and at <span class='bible'>1Ch. 20:7<\/span>) occur, the last under the form Shammah. He is called Shimei (<span class='bible'>2Sa. 21:21<\/span>); but Shimeah == Shimah (<span class='bible'>2Sa. 13:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Sa. 13:32<\/span>); and this appears to have been his real name.<\/p>\n<p>(14, 15) <strong>Nethaneel . . . Raddai . . . Ozem.<\/strong>Not named elsewhere in the Scriptures. The son of Jesse, omitted in our present Heb. text, is called Elihu in the Syriac version, which makes him seventh and David the eighth. The name Elihu occurs in <span class='bible'>1Ch. 27:18<\/span> for Eliab.<\/p>\n<p>(16) <strong>Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail.<\/strong>Literally, <em>And their sisters,<\/em> &amp;c. If the reading in <span class='bible'>2Sa. 17:25<\/span> be correct, these two women were daughters of Nahash, who must therefore have been a wife of Jesse. Abigail (there called Abigal) was mother of the warrior Amasa, who became Absaloms general (<span class='bible'>2Sa. 19:13<\/span>), and was afterwards assassinated by Joab (<span class='bible'>2Sa. 20:10<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abishai.<\/strong><em>Abshai,<\/em> here and elsewhere in the chronicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joab,<\/strong> the famous commander-in-chief of Davids forces (see <span class='bible'>1Ch. 11:6-8<\/span>); and for Joab and Abishai, who, like Asahel, was one of Davids heroes (<span class='bible'>1Ch. 11:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ch. 11:26<\/span>), comp. <span class='bible'>1Ch. 18:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ch. 18:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ch. 19:10<\/span> <em>seq.,<\/em> <span class='bible'>1Ch. 21:2<\/span> <em>et seq.,<\/em> <span class='bible'>1Ch. 27:24<\/span>. Davids champions were thus his immediate kin, just as Abner was to Saul.<\/p>\n<p>(17) <strong>Jether the Ishmeelite.<\/strong>Incorrectly called Ithra an Israelite in <span class='bible'>2Sa. 17:25<\/span>. The later abhorrence of alien marriages seems to have been unknown in the age of David.
