The sons of Elah<\/em> and Kenaz<\/em> are co-ordinated, as each representing a family descended from Caleb.<\/p>\n Verse 15<\/span>. Caleb the son of Jephunneh<\/B><\/I>] We have already met with this eminent person in Nu 13:6<\/span>; Nu 13:30<\/span>; Nu 14:24<\/span>, and elsewhere; and seen his courageous piety and inflexible integrity. The Targum<\/I> says here, “They called him Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, because he had purged<\/I> his soul from the counsel of the spies.”<\/P> <\/p>\n Another Kenaz, differing from that Kenaz 1Ch 4:13<\/span>. Or his name might be Uknaz. <\/P> <\/p>\n And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh<\/strong>,…. Jephunneh is not the same with Hezron, as the Targum, but another son of Kenaz, hence called the Kenezite, Jos 14:6<\/span> and brother of Othniel; and Caleb his son is the same that was sent one of the spies of the land of Canaan by Moses, see Nu 13:6<\/span><\/p>\n his sons were Iru, Elah, and Naam<\/strong>; of whom we nowhere else read:<\/p>\n and the sons of Elah, even Kenaz<\/strong>; another Kenaz, or rather it should be read Uknaz; so Jarchi and Kimchi.<\/p>\n Of Iru, Elah, and Naam, the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh (cf. on 1Ch 4:13<\/span>), nothing more is known. To connect Elah with the Edomite chief of that name (1Ch 1:52<\/span>) is arbitrary. Of Elah’s sons only “and Kenaz” is mentioned; the copul. before shows clearly that a name has been dropped out before it. <\/p>\n (15) The sons of Caleb, son of Jephunneh.<\/strong>Caleb son of Jephunneh is called the Kenizzite, Jos. 14:6-14<\/span>. He obtained a part among the children of Judah (Jos. 15:13<\/span>), because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel (Jos. 14:14<\/span>). If Caleb the Kenizzite and his clan were received among the Hezronite houses of Judah, this new division of the Hezronites would henceforth be known as the house of Caleb, 1Sa. 25:3<\/span>; or simply Caleb (= Chelubai, the Calebite). (See Notes on 1Ch. 2:42<\/span>; 1Ch. 2:49<\/span>.)<\/p>\n Elah<\/strong> occurred 1Ch. 1:52<\/span>, as an Edomite princedom, like Kenaz in 1Ch. 1:53<\/span>.<\/p>\n Naam<\/strong> is perhaps Naamah, Jos. 15:41<\/span>, a town in the Shephelah.<\/p>\n And the sons of Elah, even Kenaz.<\/strong>The Heb. is, and the sons of Mah and Kenaz,<\/em> that is, two clans of Calebites called Elah and Kenaz. Comp. 1Ch. 4:13<\/span>, and 1Ch. 2:42<\/span>; 1Ch. 3:21<\/span>. Some MSS., the LXX., Vulg., and Targum omit and<\/em> before Kenaz. But the word Elah,<\/em> with different points, might be read elleh,<\/em> these. It may be suggested, therefore, that we have in this last sentence the subscription to the list begun at 1Ch. 4:13<\/span>, lleh bn Qnaz,<\/em> these are the sons of Kenaz. Others suppose a name omitted, and render: and the sons of Elah . . . and Kenaz. Jehaleleel may have dropped out after the like-sounding Elah.<\/p>\n 1Ch 4:15 And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh; Iru, Elah, and Naam: and the sons of Elah, even Kenaz.<\/p>\n Ver. 15.
