When the next census was made, <span class='bible'>Num. 26<\/span>, the tribe of Judah amounted to <I>seventy-six thousand<\/I> <I>five hundred<\/I>, an increase of <I>one thousand nine hundred<\/I>; while the tribe of Simeon amounted only to <I>twenty-two thousand two hundred<\/I>, a decrease of <I>thirty-seven thousand one hundred<\/I>. The other Simeonite clans (<span class='bible'>Num. 26:12<\/span>), are meant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neither did all their family multiply.<\/strong>Rather, <em>nor did they multiply their whole clan.<\/em> The word clan (<em>mishpahath<\/em>) is here used in the wider sense of tribe. This remark is borne out by what we otherwise know of the tribe of Simeon. It was never historically important, and appears to have ultimately been absorbed by Judah, within which its domain was included (<span class='bible'>Jos. 19:1<\/span>).
