Gershom<\/em> was the name of Moses’ son; Exo 2:22<\/span>.<\/p>\n A general account of the several branches of the tribe of Levi.<\/P><\/p>\n This he repeats, as the foundation of the following genealogy of those Levites who were not priests. <\/P> <\/p>\n 16-48. The sons of Levi; Gershom,<\/B>&c.This repetition (see 1Ch6:1<\/span>) is made, as the historian here begins to trace the genealogyof the Levitical families who were not priests. The list is a longone, comprising the chiefs or heads of their several families untilDavid’s reign, who made a new and different classification of them bycourses.<\/P><\/p>\n The sons of Levi, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.<\/strong> Which is repeated from 1Ch 6:1<\/span> for the sake of their posterity, whose names are given in the three following verses, in the same manner as in Ex 6:17<\/span>.<\/p>\n (Ch. 6).<\/strong> The families and cities of the Levites. – Vv. 1-34. Register of the families of the Levites. – This is introduced by an enumeration of the sons and grandsons of Levi (1Ch 6:16-19<\/span>), which is followed by lists of families in six lines of descent: ( a<\/em>) the descendants of Gershon (1Ch 6:20-21<\/span>), of Kohath (1Ch 6:22-28<\/span>), and of Merari (1Ch 6:29-30<\/span>); and ( b<\/em>) the genealogies of David’s chief musicians (1Ch 6:31<\/span>, 1Ch 6:32<\/span>), of Heman the Kohathite (1Ch 6:33-38<\/span>), of Asaph the Gershonite (1Ch 6:39-43<\/span>), and of Ethan the Merarite (1Ch 6:44-47<\/span>); and in 1Ch 6:48<\/span>, 1Ch 6:49<\/span>, some notes as to the service performed by the other Levites and the priests are added.<\/p>\n (6:1-4).<\/strong> The sons of Levi are in 1Ch 6:1<\/span> again enumerated as in 1Ch 6:1<\/span>; then in 1Ch 6:16-22<\/span> the sons of these three sons, i.e., the grandsons of Levi, are introduced, while in 1Ch 6:1<\/span> only the sons of Kohath are mentioned. The only object of this enumeration is to make quite clear the descent of the Levitic families which follow. The name of the first son of Levi is in 1Ch 6:16<\/span>, 1Ch 6:17<\/span>, 1Ch 6:20<\/span>, etc. of this chapter , which was the name of Moses’ son, cf. 1Ch 23:15<\/span>.; whereas in 1Ch 6:1<\/span> and in the Pentateuch we find a different pronunciation, viz., . The names of Levi’s grandsons in 1Ch 6:17-22<\/span> coincide with the statements of the Pentateuch, Exo 6:17-19<\/span>, and Num 3:17-20<\/span>, cf. Num 26:57<\/span>. Bertheau and other commentators consider the words in 1Ch 6:17<\/span><\/em>, “and these are the families of Levi according to their fathers,” to be a “concluding subscription” to the statements of 1Ch 6:15-17<\/span>, and would remove before , as not compatible with this supposition. But in this he is wrong: for although the similar statement in Exo 6:20<\/span> is a subscription, yet it is in Num 3:20<\/span> a superscription, and must in our verse also be so understood; for otherwise the enumeration of the descendants of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, which follows, would be brought in very abruptly, without any connecting particle, and the before points to the same conclusion.<\/p>\n Levite Families, Verses 16-30<\/strong><\/p>\n The sons of Levi” named again; they are the three chief families of the Levites. Other lesser families are found in each of the three, which are enumerated in the succeeding verses. Of Gershom were two: Libni and Shimei; of Kohath were four: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel; of Merari were two: Mahli and Mushi. Verses 20-21 are the descendants of Gershom, verses 22-28 are those of Kohath, and verses 29-30 list the children of Marad’s sons.<\/p>\n Among the descendants of Kohath, in verse 28, are named the sons of Samuel the prophet, Vashni and Abiah. Vashni is called Joel in other places (1Sa 8:2<\/span>).<\/p>\n (16-19) The three branches of Levi with their main subdivisions. The sentence concludes the short list of the great Levitical houses, just as at Exo. 6:19<\/span>. (See also Num. 3:20<\/span>, where a like formula appears to introduce what follows.)<\/p>\n 1Ch 6:16<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. &c. <\/strong>The sons of Levi<\/em><\/strong><\/strong> This pedigree of the posterity of Levi is given again, 1Ch 6:43<\/span>. It appears most probable, that in this catalogue the name of the son of Gershom was omitted, and Libni, <\/em>inserted, from beno, his son, <\/em>since the name of Gershom’s son in the Syriac and Arabic, 1Ch 6:20<\/span>, is said to be Nahath instead of Jahath, as we find it in the second catalogue.
