The two cities must have been ancient seats of the worship of Ashtoreth and Anath. The names still survive in <em>Tell-Ashtereh<\/em> and <em>Anta.<\/em> Joshua (<em>50100<\/em>) reads Beeshterahperhaps <strong>a<\/strong> popular pronunciation of Beth-Ashterah (house of Ashtoreth).<\/p>\n<p>(72) <strong>Kedesh<\/strong> means sanctuary. <span class='bible'>Jos. 19:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jos. 21:28<\/span> has Kishion, which may have borne the other name, as being the seat of a famous sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>(73) <strong>Ramoth.<\/strong>In <span class='bible'>Joshua 21<\/span> Jarmuth, but in <span class='bible'>Jos. 19:21<\/span> Remeth. Jarmuth occurs in <span class='bible'>Jos. 12:11<\/span>, and is probably right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anem.<\/strong><span class='bible'>Jos. 21:29<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jos. 19:21<\/span> has En-gannim. <span class='bible'>Jos. 15:34<\/span> mentions a Judan city called ha-Enam (the two fountains), and that not far from En-gannim (fount of gardens). Anem is very much like Enam.<\/p>\n<p>(74) <strong>Mashal<\/strong> is perhaps a popular pronunciation of Mishal (<span class='bible'>Jos. 21:30<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jos. 19:26<\/span>). (Comp. Shlh = Shelh.)<\/p>\n<p>(75) <strong>Hukok.<\/strong>Helkath (<span class='bible'>Jos. 19:25<\/span>). Hukkk was a city of Naphtali (<span class='bible'>Jos. 19:34<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>(76) <strong>Kedesh in Galilee.<\/strong>A city of refuge (<span class='bible'>Jos. 21:32<\/span>); the modern <em>Kedes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hammon<\/strong> =Haminoth-dor, hot springs of Dor (<span class='bible'>Jos. 21:32<\/span>); also called Hammath (<span class='bible'>Jos. 19:35<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirjathaim.<\/strong>In <span class='bible'>Jos. 21:32<\/span> Kartan; a contracted form of the dual of Kereth (=Kirjah), like Dothan for Dothaim. On the west side of the Jordan River there were cities selected from the various families of the tribe of Levi, three of which were cities of refuge. They were Hebron (1Ch 6:57), Gezer (1Ch 6:67) and Golan (1Ch 6:71). These several cities were scattered throughout the land in general, hence were taken from the different tribes.
