Others of them were employed in singing, and were masters of the song, and presided in that service, see 1Ch 6:31<\/span> who remaining<\/p>\n in the chambers were free<\/strong>; from all other work and service; and there they abode, even in the chambers of the temple, that they might be near to perform their work, and not be defiled, and made unfit for it:<\/p>\n for they were employed in that work day and night<\/strong>; some or other of them, either in composing or singing psalms and hymns, or teaching others how to sing them.<\/p>\n (33) Refers to the singers treated of in 1Ch. 9:14-16<\/span> : And these <\/em>(above mentioned<\/em>) are the minstrels, heads of Levitical families; in the Temple cells <\/em>(they lived<\/em>), exempt from all other charge; for day and night they were over them in the work.<\/em> The Hebrew is, harsh, and perhaps corrupt, but the meaning seems to be clear. It is hardly meant that the service of song in the Temple was uninterrupted (comp. Rev. 4:8<\/span>), but only that the choristers were under obligation to perpetually recurring service.<\/p>\n They were employed in that work.<\/strong>Rather, They were over them in the work.<\/em> Theythat is, the leaders for the time beinglived, like the chief warders, in the Temple cells, presiding continually over the guilds of singers.<\/p>\n (33, 34) A general subscription, or concluding statement, with reference to the preceding account of the Levites (1Ch. 9:14-32<\/span>).<\/p>\n 1Ch 9:33<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>And these are the singers, <\/em><\/strong>&c.<\/strong> And these were the ministers, the chief of the families of the Levites, who dwelt in their chambers, every one<\/em> in his turn, because they were employed day and night in their work.<\/em> Houbigant. <\/p>\n REFLECTIONS.<\/strong>1st, The Levites imitated their brethren the priests in their zeal for the work of the Lord. Long had they been destitute of temple, altar, and sacrifice; immediately on their return, therefore, till a temple can be built, a tabernacle is reared, 1Ch 9:19<\/span> and the service commences. According to their distribution in the days of David, which he had planned with Samuel the prophet, they were divided into courses, two hundred and twelve by turns succeeding to keep the charge of the tabernacle. Those who were in waiting, had their lodging round about the house of God, that they might be at hand for their work. Every one had his several duty; and some, discharged from all other employments, were, at stated hours, by turns, engaged day and night in singing God’s praises. Note; <\/em>(1.) Order in the house of God conduces greatly to the profitableness of the service. (2.) They who begin with God, may hope to prosper in their undertakings. (3.) Residence, labour, and zeal, are indispensably required from every minister of God. <\/p>\n 2nd, The verses from 1Ch 9:35-44<\/span>, are a repetition of chap. 1Ch 8:29-38<\/span> to introduce the history of Saul in the following chapter. <\/p>\n 1Ch 9:33 And these [are] the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, [who remaining] in the chambers [were] free: for they were employed in [that] work day and night.<\/p>\n Ver. 33.
