As <em> Heman<\/em> was descended from Kohath, <em> Asaph<\/em> from Gershom, and <em> Ethan<\/em> from Merari, each division of the Levites was represented by a chief musician. <em> Heman<\/em> was king&rsquo;s seer (<span class='bible'>1Ch 25:5<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p><em> Asaph the son of Berechiah<\/em> ] a descendant of Gershom; <span class='bible'>1Ch 6:39-43<\/span> (24 28, Heb.). Asaph was the chief of the musicians; <span class='bible'>1Ch 16:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ch 16:7<\/span>. One of the small collections of Psalms from which our Psalter was compiled was named after him; cp. the titles of Psalms 50, 73-83.<\/p>\n<p><em> Ethan the son of Kushaiah<\/em> ] a descendant of Merari; <span class='bible'>1Ch 6:44-47<\/span>.
