17 19. David’s Charge to the Princes<\/p>\n
18<\/strong>. the inhabitants of the land<\/em> ] Cp. 1Ch 11:4<\/span>, the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land<\/em>. The remnant of the earlier inhabitants of Canaan is meant.<\/p>\n Verse 18<\/span>. Is not the Lord your God with you?<\/B><\/I>] “Is not the WORD of the Lord your God your assistant?” – T<\/I>.<\/P> <\/P> Hath he not given you rest on every side?<\/B><\/I>] David at this time was not only king of Judea, but had also subdued most of the surrounding nations.<\/P> <\/P> Thus Solomon came to the Jewish throne with every possible advantage. Had he made a proper use of his state and of his talents, he would have been the greatest as well as the wisest of sovereigns. But alas! how soon did this pure gold become dim! He began with an unlawful matrimonial connection; this led him to a commerce that was positively forbidden by the law of God: he then multiplied his matrimonial connections with heathen women; they turned his heart away from God, and the once wise and holy Solomon died a fool and an idolater.<\/P> <\/p>\n Either, <\/P> 1. It is brought under the command of God and of you his people, all the enemies of God and of Israel, in it or near it, being now perfectly subdued. Or, <\/P> 2. It is really subdued, whereof both God and your own eyes are witnesses. <\/P> <\/p>\n Is not the Lord your God with you<\/strong>?…. Blessing them with wealth and riches:<\/p>\n and hath he not given you rest on every side<\/strong>? from all enemies within and without; so that they had peace and quietness, and leisure to attend the service he recommended to them:<\/p>\n for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into my hand<\/strong>; meaning the rest of the Canaanites, who before were unsubdued, as even the Jebusites in Jerusalem:<\/p>\n and the land is subdued before the Lord, and before his people<\/strong>; and the extent of it carried to its utmost bounds, as God had promised.<\/p>\n (18) Is not the Lord your God with you?<\/strong>The proof appears in what follows.<\/p>\n And hath he not?<\/strong>Rather, and he hath given you rest<\/em> (1Ch. 22:9<\/span>).<\/p>\n He hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand.<\/strong>The surrounding people, whose reduction is described in 1 Chronicles 18-20 (Comp. for the phrase, Jos. 2:24<\/span>.)<\/p>\n And the land is subdued before the Lord<\/strong> . . .<\/strong>The chronicler, or his authority, thinks of passages like Num. 32:22<\/span>; Num. 32:29<\/span>, and Jos. 18:1<\/span>.<\/p>\n 1Ch 22:18<\/span> [Is] not the LORD your God with you? and hath he [not] given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people.<\/p>\n Ver. 18.
