11<\/strong>. thine<\/em> is the kingdom, O LORD, and<\/em> thou art exalted as head above all<\/em> ] Render, Thine, is the kingdom, O LORD, and thine it is to be exalted as head over all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Verse 11<\/span>. Thine, O Lord<\/B><\/I>, is <\/B>the greatness<\/B><\/I>] This verse is thus paraphrased by the Targum<\/I>: “Thine, O Lord, is the magnificence<\/I>; for thou hast created the world by thy great power<\/I>, and by thy might<\/I> hast led our fathers out of Egypt, and with great signs hast caused them to pass through the Red Sea. Thou hast appeared gloriously<\/I> on Mount Sinai, with troops of angels, in giving law to thy people. Thou hast gained the victory<\/I> over Amalek; over Sihon and Og, kings of Canaan. By the splendour of thy majesty thou hast caused the sun to stand still on Gibeon, and the moon in the valley of Ajalon, until thy people, the house of Israel, were avenged of their enemies. All things that are in heaven and earth<\/I> are the work of thy hands, and thou rulest<\/I> over and sustainest<\/I> whatsoever is in the heavens and in the earth. Thine, O Lord, is the kingdom<\/I> in the firmament; and thou art exalted<\/I> above the heavenly angels, and over all who are constituted rulers<\/I> upon earth.”<\/P> <\/p>\n Thine, O Lord, is the greatness and the power, <\/B>i.e. thou art great and powerful, &c. <\/P> As head above all; <\/B>as the sovereign Lord and Owner of all persons and things. <\/P> <\/p>\n Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty<\/strong>,…. That is, either God is possessed of all greatness and immensity, of dignity of nature, and of all perfections; of almighty power, of excellent glory, of superiority to all beings and of honour, and majesty, and all that grandeur, might, and honour in men, and victory over others; the majestic appearance they make, and exaltation above others they have, are all of God:<\/p>\n for all that is in the heaven and in the earth [is thine]<\/strong>; they are both made by him, and all that is in them, and therefore he has the sole right unto them:<\/p>\n thine is the kingdom, O Lord<\/strong>; of nature and Providence; he has the sole dominion over all creatures, and the sovereign disposal of all things:<\/p>\n and thou art exalted as head above all<\/strong>; men on earth, and angels in heaven.<\/p>\n (11) Thine, O Lord, is the greatness.<\/strong>The point of 1Ch. 29:11-12<\/span> seems to be that David arrogates nothing to himself; but, with the humility of genuine greatness, ascribes everything to God. As if he said, The greatness of my kingdom, the prowess of my warriors, the splendour and majesty of my throne, are thine, for thine are all things.<\/p>\n Greatness.<\/strong>Gdullh,<\/em> a late word. (Comp. Psa. 71:21<\/span>; Psa. 145:3<\/span>.)<\/p>\n Power.<\/strong>Strictly, manly strength;<\/em> then valour, prowess (Psa. 21:13<\/span>). (Comp. Exo. 15:3<\/span>.)<\/p>\n The glory.<\/strong>Ornament, beauty, splendour (Isa. 3:18<\/span>; Isa. 13:19<\/span>; Isa. 46:13<\/span>; Psa. 96:6<\/span>).<\/p>\n Majesty.<\/strong>See Psa. 21:6<\/span>; Psa. 96:6<\/span>.<\/p>\n Victory.<\/strong>Glory, splendour (1Sa. 15:29<\/span>). Victory is the meaning of the word in Syriac, and so the LXX. and Vulg. render here. But the Syriac version has beauty. or glory. With the whole ascription, comp. Rev. 4:11<\/span>; Rev. 5:12<\/span>; Rev. 7:12<\/span>.<\/p>\n All that is in the heavens . . . is thine.<\/strong>The pronoun (lk<\/em>) seems to have fallen out before the following: <\/em>Thine (lk<\/em>) is the kingdom. (Comp. for the idea Psa. 89:11<\/span>; Psa. 24:1<\/span>.)<\/p>\n The kingdom.<\/strong>The universal sovereignty (Psa. 96:10<\/span>; Psa. 97:1<\/span>; Psa. 22:28<\/span>).<\/p>\n Thou art exalted as head above all.<\/strong>Lit., And the self-exalted over all as head<\/em> (art thou<\/em>).<\/em> (Comp. Num. 16:3<\/span>.) Here also the pronoun (tth<\/em>) may have been lost at the end. Ewald, however, explains the apparent participle as an Aramaized infinitive: And the being exalted over all as head is thine.<\/em> (Comp. Isa. 24:21<\/span> for the supremacy of God over all powers of heaven and earth.)<\/p>\n As head.<\/strong>Comp. Deu. 28:13<\/span>; Psa. 18:43<\/span>; Col. 2:10<\/span>.<\/p>\n 1Ch 29:11<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory,<\/em><\/strong> &c.<\/strong> The Talmudists paraphrase this and the next verse as follows: “Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, <\/em>for thou createdst the world; and the power, <\/em>for thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, and carriedst them through the Red Sea, and <\/em>revealedst thyself in glory <\/em>upon mount Sinai, to give the law to thy people; and obtainedst victory over Amalek, Sihon, Og, and the Canaanites, and madest the sun and the moon to stand still by the majesty of thy Spirit, till thy people were avenged of their enemies; For all things both in heaven and in earth <\/em>are the work of thy hands; thou supportest and rulest all things, and thou art exalted above all <\/em>the angels in heaven, as well as all the kings upon earth. All these excellencies and all others are in God originally, essentially, eminently, transcendently.
