The Lord “dwells” in the inmost recess of the house.<\/p>\n amounting to six hundred talents<\/em> ] This detail is not found elsewhere. But cp. 1Ch 29:4<\/span>.<\/p>\n The most holy house – <\/B>i. e., the sanctuary, or holy of holies. On the probable value of the gold, see 1Ki 10:14<\/span> note.<\/P> <\/p>\n 8. the most holy house<\/B>It wasa perfect cube (compare 1Ki 6:20<\/span>).<\/P> overlaid it with . . . gold,amounting to six hundred talents<\/B>at 4 per ounce, equal to3,600,000.<\/P><\/p>\n [See comments on 2Ch 3:1]<\/span>.<\/p>\n The most holy place, with the figures of the cherubim and the veil;<\/em> cf. 1Ki 6:19-28<\/span>. – The length of the most holy place in front of the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, consequently measured in the same way as the porch (2Ch 3:4<\/span>); the breadth, i.e., the depth of it, also twenty cubits. The height, which was the same (1Ki 6:20<\/span>), is not stated; but instead of that we have the weight of the gold which was used for the gilding, which is omitted in 1 Kings 6, viz., 600 talents for the overlaying of the walls, and 50 shekels for the nails to fasten the sheet gold on the wainscotting. He covered the upper chambers of the most holy place also with gold; see 1Ch 28:11<\/span>. This is not noticed in 1 Kings 6.<\/p>\n (c<\/em>) THE HOLY OF HOLIES, OR CHANCEL, WITH THE CHERUBIM AND THE VAIL<\/strong> (2Ch. 3:8-14<\/span>).<\/p>\n (8) The most holy house.<\/strong>The chamber of the Holy of holies,<\/em> or chancel,<\/em> called also the oracle<\/em> (Dbr<\/em>),<\/em> 1Ki. 6:5<\/span>. (So 2Ch. 3:10<\/span>.)<\/p>\n The length whereof was according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits.<\/strong>Its<\/em> length before the breadth of the house was twenty cubits.<\/em> (See Note on 2Ch. 3:4<\/span>.)<\/p>\n And the breadth thereof twenty cubits.<\/strong>1Ki. 6:20<\/span> adds that the height also was twenty cubits, so that the chamber formed a perfect cube.<\/p>\n Six hundred talents.<\/strong>The weight of gold thus expended on the plating of the walls of the inner shrine is not given in Kings. Solomons whole yearly revenue was 666 talents (1Ki. 10:14<\/span>).<\/p>\n 2Ch 3:8 And he made the most holy house, the length whereof [was] according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits: and he overlaid it with fine gold, [amounting] to six hundred talents.<\/p>\n Ver. 8. Six hundred talents.<\/strong> ] Which is, as we count it, two millions and two hundred and fifty thousand pound.<\/p>\n the most holy = the holy of holies. See note on Exo 3:5. <\/p>\n 2Ch 3:8-9<\/p>\n 2Ch 3:8-9<\/p>\n REGARDING THE HOLY OF HOLIES<\/p>\n “And he made the most holy house: the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits; and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to six hundred talents. And the weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold. And he overlaid the upper chambers with gold.”<\/p>\n The upper chambers mentioned here do not conform to any architectural description, either of their utility, or their exact location. The whole chapter appears to have a strange mixture of things that Solomon was instructed to do, and did not do, and of things which he did contrary to God’s will.<\/p>\n E.M. Zerr:<\/p>\n 2Ch 3:4-8. In using nails in the construction of a building, it would be necessary to use a hammer, and we know there would be some sound. This should be considered when commenting on 1Ki 6:7, a passage often misunderstood. <\/p>\n the most holy: Exo 26:33, 1Ki 6:19, 1Ki 6:20, Heb 9:3, Heb 9:9, Heb 10:19 <\/p>\n Reciprocal: 1Ki 6:16 – built them 2Ch 29:16 – the inner part Eze 41:4 – twenty cubits Mar 15:38 – General<\/p>\n 2Ch 3:8-10. Fine gold amounting to six hundred talents That is, upward of three millions forty-five thousand pounds sterling. This vast sum was expended on the holy of holies alone, a room only ten yards square. The weight of the nails That is, of each of the nails, screws, or pins, by which the golden plates were fastened to the walls that were overlaid with them, was fifty shekels of gold The meaning seems to be, that each weighed or was worth that sum, workmanship and all.
