And<\/strong> Jehoiada appointed<\/em>, etc.] This whole ver. is represented in Kings simply by the words, “And the priest appointed officers (‘offices,’ mg.) over the house of the Lord” (i.e. officers for the care of the Temple, e.g. to see to cleaning and repairing it).<\/p>\n by the hand<\/em> ] R.V. under the hand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n as it was ordained by David<\/em> ] R.V. according to the order of David<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Note that the Chronicler ascribes all sacrificial arrangements to the law of Moses, but all musical arrangements to David.<\/p>\n The priests the Levites – <\/B>Rather, with the versions, the priests and the Levites. It was the duty of the priests alone to offer the burnt offerings Num 18:1-7<\/span>, and of the Levites alone to praise God with singing and music 1Ch 23:5<\/U><\/span>; 1Ch 25:1-7<\/span>.<\/P> <\/p>\n Appointed the offices of the house of the Lord by the hand<\/B> or, as it is in the Hebrew, put the offices of the house of the Lord into the hand<\/I>, i.e. he restored the priests and Levites, either, <\/P> 1. To their places and offices, which possibly in the time of the idolatrous kings, and of Athaliah, had been disposed of to persons of other tribes, partly to gratify their wicked friends, and partly to bring Gods house and worship into disgrace; or, <\/P> 2. Joy and gladness now spread through the land; the king and people, by Jehoiada as mediator, renew their covenant with God and each other; and, as the first fruits of their zeal, Baal’s hated worship is destroyed, and regularity and order restored to the house of God. Thus was this happy revolution effected so prosperously and speedily, and once more the seed of David possessed in peace the throne of their ancestors. Note; <\/em>(1.) The throne of David shall never be vacant; one king for ever reigns upon it, whom none of his enemies can gainsay or resist: happy they who are spiritually the subjects of his government. (2.)
