Two particular instances of the care of Hezekiah concerning church matters, having put them into good order, to keep them so. The tithes and other holy things being brought in, he provided, 1. That they should be carefully laid up, and not left exposed in loose heaps, liable to be wasted and embezzled. He ordered chambers to be made ready in some of the courts of the temple for store-chambers (v. 11), and into them the offerings were brought and there kept under lock and key, 2Ch 31:12; 2Ch 31:13. Treasures or store-keepers were appointed, who had the oversight of them, to see that moth and rust did not corrupt them nor thieves break through to steal. This wisdom of laying up the surplus in days of plenty we may learn from the ant, who provideth meat in summer. The laying up in store what was brought in was an encouragement to people to pay in their contributions. That will be given cheerfully by the public which appears to be well husbanded. 2. That they should be faithfully laid out, according to the uses they were intended for. Church treasures are not to be hoarded any longer than till there is occasion for them, lest even the rust should be a witness against those who hoard them. Officers were appointed, men (no doubt) of approved wisdom and faithfulness, to distribute the oblations of the Lord and the most holy things among the priests (v. 14), and to see that they all had a competent maintenance for themselves and their families. The law provided sufficient for them all, and therefore, if some had too little, it must be because others had too much; to prevent such inequality these officers were to go by some certain rule of proportion in the disposal of the incomes of the temple. It is said of the priests here (v. 18) that in their set office they sanctified themselves; in faith they sanctified themselves (so the word is), that is, as bishop Patrick explains it, they attended their ministry at the house of God, not doubting but they should be provided with all things necessary. Now, because they served God in that confidence, care was taken that they should not be made ashamed of their hope. Note, Those that sanctify themselves to God and his service in faith, believing that he will see them want for nothing that is good for them, shall certainly be fed. Out of the offerings of the Lord distribution was made, (1.) To the priests in the cities (v. 15), who staid at home while their brethren went to Jerusalem, and did good there in teaching the good knowledge of the Lord. The preaching priests were maintained as well as the sacrificing priests, and those that abode by the stuff as well as those that warred the warfare. (2.) To those that entered into the house of the Lord, all the males from three years old and upwards; for the male children even at that tender age, it seems, were allowed to come into the temple with their parents, and shared with them in this distribution, v. 16. (3.) Even the Levites from twenty years old and upwards had their share, v. 17. (4.) The wives and children of the priests and Levites had a comfortable maintenance out of those offerings, v. 18. In maintaining ministers, regard must be had to their families, that not they only, but theirs, may have food convenient. In some countries where ministers have their salary paid them by the state an addition is made to it upon the birth of a child. (5.) The priests in the country, that lived in the fields of the suburbs, were not overlooked in this ministration, v. 19. Those also had their share who were inhabitants of the villages, though they might be supposed to live at a less expense.

II. A general character of Hezekiah’s services for the support of religion, 2Ch 31:20; 2Ch 31:21. 1. His pious zeal reached to all the parts of his kingdom: Thus he did throughout all Judah; every part of the country, and not those only that lay next him, shared in the good fruits of his government. 2. He sincerely designed to please God, and approved himself to him in all he did: He wrought that which was good before the Lord his God; all his care was to do that which should be accepted of God, which was right (that is, agreeable to natural equity), and truth (that is, agreeable to divine revelation and his covenant with God), before the Lord; to do according to that law which is holy, just, and good. 3. What he began he went through with, prosecuted it with vigour, and did it with all his heart. 4. All his good intentions were brought to a good issue; whatever he did in the service of the house of God, and in the government of his kingdom, he prospered in it. Note, What is undertaken with a sincere regard to the glory of God will succeed to our own honour and comfort at last.

Fuente: Matthew Henry’s Whole Bible Commentary

2Ch 31:11

Services and Servants-Verses 11-21

To solve the problem of the heaps of grain and other produce which the people were bringing to the temple Hezekiah commanded the building of storerooms for them. The seventh month corresponded with October of the modern calendar, and was the time when the rainy season approached. To prevent spoilage it was necessary that the tithes and offerings be stored in shelters. In later times, when a surplus was lacking, these rooms furnished an apartment for Tobiah the Ammonite (Neh 13:4-9).

Men of the Levites were appointed to have charge of these things which had been dedicated to the service of the priests and Levites. Under them were ten others, all were under the commandment of king Hezekiah and the high priest Azariah. In addition to these, other Levites were appointed from among the porters. These were gatemen and guards whose duty it was to accept the things brought in by the people and deliver them to the men who would distribute to those who would consume them.

Since most of the Levites were not always at the temple it was necessary to have men in the various cities where they dwelled to receive and apportion each man’s lot. This was distributed according to the number of males in each household. All males from three years old upward were considered in the genealogy, but the distribution seems to have been determined to the courses of the Levites who actually served. These were determined from the age of twenty years and took into account wives, sons, and daughters. These included both priests and ordinary Levites, but all were expected to maintain their sanctification to participate in the holy things. Only those blinded by some false theory could view this as anything other than historical material. The mention of all these names could not be a forgery, because the Jews knew too much about their genealogies (even down to and including the times of Jesus Christ) to have allowed such a thing. This account was written by the Chronicler about the time of the end of the Babylonian captivity; and the author followed very closely the records before his eyes. Furthermore, in instances where we are able to find parallel accounts in other Scriptures, we are impressed with the fact that the Chronicler’s accounts are always reconcilable with the parallels.

E.M. Zerr:

2Ch 31:11-12. The produce had been temporarily piled up while the amount was incomplete. Now that the collection was finished, it was necessary to make better provisions to care for it. The chambers were storehouses, suitable for housing the products of the field and herd, to be used later as the service demanded. Someone must be made responsible for the proper distribution of this store. One man, Cononiah, was made head of the entire department, with helpers under him. Offerings and tithes indicates that there must have been a difference. That is true, and it is as follows. Every Jew was required to give a tithe or tenth of his income to the Lord. If his flocks brought ten young animals into the world, one of them must be turned over to the Levites to be used in the service of the Lord. If the field prdouced a hundred bushels of wheat, ten of it were to be turned over. But in addition to all the tithes, a Jew was encouraged to make voluntary offerings. For instance, the man who brought the ten bushels out of his crop of 100 bushels, could offer an additional five bushels if he wished, and when such a contribution was made in connection with the tithes, it was called an offering. The two words were often used interchangeably, which suggests the following observation: All tithes were offerings, but not all offerings were tithes.

2Ch 31:13. We can see that the work was well systematized into a food administration. Cononiah was chief, with a personal helper in the association of his brother Shimei (2Ch 31:12), and now the men named in this verse were to have the more direct charge of the work of distribution. They were called overseers which would be called foremen in the industrial language of our day. Hezekiah was the king and Azariah was the high priest, and they jointly commanded the whole procedure. That was very fitting, for the one was “chief executive” of the government, and the other was the supreme authority in regard to the religious activities. In a system such as the Mosaic, a combination of religious and secular principles, we would expect to see some men who were assigned to their proper places in the nation.

2Ch 31:14. This has to do with the receiving and distribution of the things brought in by the Israelites in their service as citizens. The law of Moses made certain requirements of all persons regarding their income, and someone would be needed to see that the things were taken care of. Kore was in charge of the east gate, to receive the products coming from that direction and placing them where they belonged in the service of the temple. Oblations comes from several Hebrew words, but all have practically the same meaning, referring to that which is given for the altar or other service to God. It is thus the same as the offerings, but the distinction of freewill offerings is explained by a closer study of the law. Certain offerings were stipulated and required of the children of Israel, and they were not left to decide the matter. In addition to them, it was permitted to make voluntary gifts to the service, and such were called freewill offerings.

2Ch 31:15. Next him means next in rank. The law did not assign any major possessions to the tribe of Levi. They had no use for it since their time was to be taken up in the service about the temple. But they needed homes, and they were provided by giving them certain cities scattered through the possessions of the other tribes. And when the turn or course of any particular group came, the ones needed at the temple would come up and serve. In the meantime they would reside in their own cities, but while there they would have to be supported. This verse is an explanation of that part of the great system.

2Ch 31:16. The Israelites observed their birth records in different methods at different epochs. At this time they entered the names of their sons when they were three years of age. Then, as they came up into maturity and were called into the priestly services, their support from the offerings was furnished as the need demanded.

2Ch 31:17. It should constantly be remembered that all priests were Levites, but not all Levites were priests. And while the record of births started when the boy was three years old, the attention of the overseers was centered on those 20 years old.

2Ch 31:18. To the genealogy (“pedigree or family list”) was a certain portion given. That was necessary because the fathers had been sanctified or set apart to the holy work of the priesthood. They had no opportunity to produce the necessities of life, therefore their wives and little ones had to be cared for out of the tithes.

2Ch 31:19. A suburb in Bible language was not what the word denotes today. Instead of meaning the outlying parts of a city, it meant the open area surrounding it. The word is from MIGRASHAH, and Strong defines it, “a suburb (i. e. open country whither flocks are driven for pasture); hence the area around a building, or the margin of a sea.” The question is sometimes raised, why would these priests need any ground if they did not engage in the production of crops. They were supported out of the gifts of the tribes. Included in those gifts were the animals turned over for the use of these men of the family of Aaron. Since the animals would be brought to these families as they were produced, and also since they would not be consumed at once, they needed an area in which to keep them. These suburbs or open fields of pasture were used for this purpose.

Fuente: Old and New Testaments Restoration Commentary

Order and Prosperity

2Ch 31:11-21

There are several noticeable expressions in this paragraph. We are told that they brought in the dedicated things faithfully, 2Ch 31:12; and that the small as well as the great received their share, even as the daily portion of each required, 2Ch 31:16, r.v. margin; also that the priests sanctified themselves in holiness, 2Ch 31:18, as though touched and quickened by the generous gifts of the people. And in consequence of their entire devotion to the service of the sanctuary, adequate provision was made for their wives and children; while officers were appointed to distribute equal ration to all in the cities of the priests, who, from age or other reasons, were not able to serve in the Temple.

The closing expression about Hezekiah, that he began nothing into which he did not put his heart and that God placed the crown of prosperity on him and his work, presents a striking contrast to the tale of disaster in the reign of Ahaz, and is an incentive to all of us to go and do likewise.
