The term &lsquo;the holy seed&rsquo; is found also in <span class='bible'>Isa 6:13<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em> have mingled themselves<\/em> ] The same phrase occurs in a passage which well illustrates our verse. <span class='bible'>Psa 106:34-35<\/span>. &lsquo;They did not destroy the peoples (&lsquo;ammm) as the Lord commanded them; but <em> mingled themselves<\/em> with the nations (haggoyyim) and learned their works&rsquo;.<\/p>\n<p><em> with the people of those lands<\/em> ] R.V. <strong> with the peoples of the lands<\/strong>, as in <span class='bible'>Ezr 9:1<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em> the hand of the princes and rulers<\/em> ] marg. &lsquo;princes and <em> deputies<\/em> &rsquo;. compare the same phrase <span class='bible'>Neh 5:7<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p> The word rendered &lsquo;rulers&rsquo; (marg. &lsquo;deputies&rsquo;) &lsquo;segnm&rsquo; is of Assyrian origin. It occurs in <span class='bible'>Isa 41:25<\/span>, and preceded by &lsquo;pekhah&rsquo; in <span class='bible'>Jer 51:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jer 51:28<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jer 51:57<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eze 23:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eze 23:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eze 23:23<\/span> as &lsquo;governors and deputies&rsquo;; in <span class='bible'>Neh 4:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Neh 4:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Neh 5:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Neh 7:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Neh 12:40<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Neh 13:11<\/span> as &lsquo;rulers&rsquo; (marg. &lsquo;deputies&rsquo;).<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;The princes&rsquo; seem to have been the chief authorities. A ruler or deputy (sagan) held under the governor a post of subordinate responsibility.<\/p>\n<p><em> chief in this trespass<\/em> ] R.V. marg. <em> first<\/em>. This is probably more correct; the chiefs and rulers had set the example of wrong-doing, &lsquo;Trespass&rsquo; <span class='bible'>Ezr 9:4<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Ezr 10:6<\/span>. Yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass  Who ought to have restrained the people from it by their authority and example; and who, by acting otherwise, have made the sin more general, and have involved themselves and the nation in the guilt of it. The case, certainly, was much the more dangerous, because the great men of the nation were the principal offenders; for through this the people would be freed from all fear of punishment, and therefore would the more readily imitate their bad example.
