Seemingly &lsquo;an Egyptian name, of a type very common from b.c. 1000 onward, but with the Heb. <em> El<\/em>, &ldquo;God,&rdquo; instead of the name of an Egyptian deity, meaning &ldquo;He whom God gave&rdquo;&nbsp;&rsquo; (F. Ll. Griffith); cf. The name, like that of his grandfather, may be of Egyptian origin, and signify &lsquo;the negro&rsquo; (i.e. the Ethiopian, <span class='bible'>Jer 13:23<\/span>). The name ( <em> Pi-neas<\/em>) is very common in Egyptian ( <em> EB.<\/em> iii. 3304).<\/p>\n<p><em> heads of the<\/em> <strong> fathers<\/strong> ] for &lsquo;heads of the fathers&rsquo; <em> houses<\/em> &rsquo; ( <em> v.<\/em> 14); so <span class='bible'>Num 31:26<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Num 32:28<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Num 36:1<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Jos 14:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jos 19:51<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jos 21:1<\/span> (all P); and frequently in Chr. This was Aaron&#8217;s eldest son. The person, whose daughter he married, Dr. Lightfoot m conjectures was an Egyptian convert, perhaps of the posterity of Potipherah, among whom Joseph had sowed the seeds of true religion, and supposes that the Egyptians used the name of Puti or Poti, either in memorial of their uncle Put,<\/p>\n<p> <span class='bible'>Ge 10:6<\/span> or in reverence of some deity of that name; but the Targum of Jonathan makes Putiel to be the same with Jethro; and so does Jarchi; but Aben Ezra seems to be most right, who takes him to be of the children of Israel, though the reason of his name is not known, and the daughter of such an one it is most likely a son of Aaron would marry:<\/p>\n<p><strong>and she bore him Phinehas<\/strong>; of whom see <span class='bible'>Nu 25:11<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>these are the heads of the Levites, according to their families<\/strong>; from whence the Levites sprung, and their several families. It may be observed, that Moses says nothing of his own offspring, only of his brother Aaron&#8217;s, partly out of modesty and humility, and partly because the priesthood was successive in the family of Aaron, but not the civil government in the family of Moses; and that he proceeds no further to give the genealogy of the remaining tribes, his chief view being to show the descent of Aaron and himself, that it might be with certainty known in after times who they were that were instruments of Israel&#8217;s deliverance out of Egypt, which would be matter of inquiry, and very desirable to be known.<\/p>\n<p>m Works, vol. 1. p. 704, 705.<\/p>\n<h4 align='right'><i><b>Fuente: John Gill&#8217;s Exposition of the Entire Bible<\/b><\/i><\/h4>\n<p>(25) <strong>According to their families.<\/strong>The genealogy proper here ends.
