The &lsquo;stranger,&rsquo; or, better, <strong> sojourner<\/strong>, Heb. <em> gr<\/em>, i.e. the <em> protected foreigner<\/em>, if he is circumcised, may keep the Passover. The <em> gr<\/em> was like the Arab <em> jr<\/em>, i.e. &lsquo;a man of another tribe or district, who coming to sojourn in a place where he was not strengthened by the presence of his own kin, put himself under the protection of a clan or of a powerful chief&rsquo; (W.R. Smith, <em> Relig. of the Semites<\/em>, p. 75 f.; cf. his <em> Kinship and Marriage in Early Arabia<\/em>, pp. 41 43). &lsquo;Stranger&rsquo; is the conventional rendering of <em> gr<\/em>; but it is inadequate: a better word would be <strong> sojourner<\/strong>, which would also preserve the connexion with the corresponding verb in such passages as <em> v.<\/em> 49, <span class='bible'>Gen 12:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gen 19:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gen 47:4<\/span>. In the legislation of JE and Deut. the <em> gr<\/em> has no legal status in Israel, and is represented as liable to oppression (<span class='bible'>Exo 22:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Exo 23:9<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu<\/span><span class='bible'>Exo 1:16<\/span>, &amp;c.): in P (cf. <span class='bible'>Eze 47:22<\/span>) he is placed on practically the same footing as the native Israelite, he enjoys the same rights (<span class='bible'>Num 35:15<\/span> &lsquo;for the <em> sojourner<\/em> and for the settler&rsquo; [above, on <em> v.<\/em> 45]; <span class='bible'>Lev 19:34<\/span> &lsquo;thou shalt love him as thyself&rsquo;), and is bound by the same laws (ch. <span class='bible'>Exo 12:19<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Lev 16:29<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 17:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 17:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 17:12-13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 17:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 18:26<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 20:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 22:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 24:16<\/span>); the principle, &lsquo;One law shall there be for the homeborn and for the <em> gr<\/em>,&rsquo; is repeatedly affirmed (ch. <span class='bible'>Exo 12:49<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Lev 24:22<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Num 9:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Num 15:15-16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Num 15:29<\/span>). Indeed, in P the term is already on the way to assume the later technical sense of &lsquo;proselyte,&rsquo; the foreigner who, being circumcised and observing the law generally, is in full religious communion with Israel.<\/p>\n<p><em> come near<\/em> ] to take part in the sacred rite.
