In <span class='bible'>Num 27:7<\/span> f. (P), cf. <span class='bible'>2Sa 3:10<\/span>, it is indeed used in the simple sense of <em> transferring<\/em> or <em> making over<\/em> (an inheritance): but it is also the word regularly used of <em> causing to pass over<\/em> children in fire to Molech (<span class='bible'>2Ki 16:3<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Eze 20:31<\/span> <em> al.<\/em>), and with &lsquo;to Molech&rsquo; alone, <span class='bible'>Lev 18:21<\/span> (H), <span class='bible'>Jer 32:35<\/span>, cf. <span class='bible'>Eze 16:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eze 23:37<\/span> (&lsquo;to them,&rsquo; i.e. to the idols), an esp. <span class='bible'>Exo 20:25-26<\/span> (the same expression as here) &lsquo;in that they <em> caused to pass over<\/em> (viz. in the fire) <em> all that first openeth the womb<\/em>.&rsquo; It may be (cf., p. 409) that this heathen practice determined the use of the same verb here: Jehovah claimed the firstborn; and the Israelite was to <em> cause<\/em> his firstborn <em> to pass over<\/em> to Him: the child was not, however, retained by Him, or offered to Him as a sacrifice, but was to be &lsquo;redeemed&rsquo; by its father ( <em> v.<\/em> 13).<\/p>\n<p><em> and every firstling<\/em>, &amp;c.] lit. <em> and all that first openeth<\/em> [the womb], (even) <em> the casting<\/em> (  ) <em> of beasts, that thou shalt have: shger<\/em> (the root is preserved in the Aram. <em> sh<\/em> <em> e<\/em> <em> gar<\/em>, to &lsquo;cast&rsquo;), denotes a newly born animal, <span class='bible'>Deu 7:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 28:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 28:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 28:51<\/span> .
