12<\/strong>. thou shalt<\/em> cause to pass over<\/strong> unto<\/em> Jehovah<\/strong> ] The word is not the ordinary Heb. for ‘set apart’; and its use here is remarkable. In Num 27:7<\/span> f. (P), cf. 2Sa 3:10<\/span>, it is indeed used in the simple sense of transferring<\/em> or making over<\/em> (an inheritance): but it is also the word regularly used of causing to pass over<\/em> children in fire to Molech (2Ki 16:3<\/span>, Eze 20:31<\/span> al.<\/em>), and with ‘to Molech’ alone, Lev 18:21<\/span> (H), Jer 32:35<\/span>, cf. Eze 16:21<\/span>; Eze 23:37<\/span> (‘to them,’ i.e. to the idols), an esp. Exo 20:25-26<\/span> (the same expression as here) ‘in that they caused to pass over<\/em> (viz. in the fire) all that first openeth the womb<\/em>.’ It may be (cf., p. 409) that this heathen practice determined the use of the same verb here: Jehovah claimed the firstborn; and the Israelite was to cause<\/em> his firstborn to pass over<\/em> to Him: the child was not, however, retained by Him, or offered to Him as a sacrifice, but was to be ‘redeemed’ by its father ( v.<\/em> 13).<\/p>\n and every firstling<\/em>, &c.] lit. and all that first openeth<\/em> [the womb], (even) the casting<\/em> ( ) of beasts, that thou shalt have: shger<\/em> (the root is preserved in the Aram. sh<\/em> e<\/em> gar<\/em>, to ‘cast’), denotes a newly born animal, Deu 7:13<\/span>; Deu 28:4<\/span>; Deu 28:18<\/span>; Deu 28:51<\/span> . The ‘beasts’ meant (as the parallel, Exo 34:19<\/span>, states explicitly) are ox and sheep.<\/p>\n Thou shalt set apart, i. e. separate it from the rest, resign thy right in it to God.
