He also brought him under an oath and took away the mighty of the land, that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his treaty (covenant) it might stand.&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p> Nebuchadnezzar replaced Jehoiachin with his half-brother Mattaniah, and gave him a new name, Zedekiah (<span class='bible'>2Ki 24:17<\/span>), a sign of allegiance and vassalhood. Then he bound him by a solemn treaty and an oath of loyalty, and removing to Babylon all &lsquo;the mighty&rsquo; of the land (<span class='bible'>2Ki 24:16<\/span>), left him weak and totally dependent. It was his policy so to weaken his subjects that they could not rebel. Kings seed is indefinite and refers to the leading men in Jerusalem whom the king of Babylon pressed into service. Eze 17:5). He deported the leaders of Judah to Babylon so Judah would be a docile servant and continue to exist with a measure of independence under his control (cf. 2Ki 24:17; Jer 37:1). Nebuchadnezzar made a binding covenant with Zedekiah obligating him to serve Babylon, and Zedekiah flourished for a time. The vine&rsquo;s roots remained under it, but it grew low and spreading rather than upward and fruitful, and it extended its branches toward the eagle, Nebuchadnezzar (cf.
