A happy life, here and hereafter; an eternal life, and not die the second death: this must be understood, should he appear a truly righteous person; one that does not trust to his own righteousness, but to the righteousness of Christ, and lives by faith on that; looking for the hope of righteousness through it, and behaving agreeably to his character:

but if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity; as he will by trusting to it; if he trusts to it for acceptance with God, and justification in his sight, and thinks himself proof against all temptation to sin on account of it; and that he has righteousness enough to make amends for sins committed, or for other sins he may commit; and which he may venture upon through this false notion, and so be led on to an open course of sinning, and series of committing iniquity:

all his righteousness shall not be remembered; God will take no notice of it; it shall be of no avail to justify him from sin, and secure him from wrath; it will be as if it never had been:

but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it; an eternal death, which is the just wages of sin; from which a man’s own righteousness can never deliver him, though the righteousness of Christ does deliver from it; see Pr 10:2.

Fuente: John Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible

“When I say to the righteous that he will surely live, if he trusts to his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered. But in his iniquity which he has committed, in that will he surely die.”

The warning here is against one who has lived rightly and therefore is confident that he deserves the goodwill of God. So he feels that God now owes him something and that he can turn to sin without losing God’s goodwill. That is the belief that a man’s destiny depends on the quantity of his good works. But that is denied here. It is here clearly stated that God’s judgment on a man is not determined by the quantity of his righteousness but by his revealed attitude of heart.

In ancient days many believed that the sins of men were put in the balances on one side and the good on the other, and a man would receive according to which weighed the heaviest. Their view was that if a man had lived a righteous life he could get away with a bit of sinfulness. But Ezekiel gives a firm and emphatic denial of such an idea. It mattered not what the weight of a man’s sins was, nor what the weight of his righteous deeds. What mattered was whether his heart was set rightly towards God. And only a man whose heart was rightly set towards God could be sure that he would live and not die. Only he could look forward with confidence to the favour of God.

Fuente: Commentary Series on the Bible by Peter Pett

Eze 33:13. If he trust to his own righteousness “If he rely upon the good works which he has done, and think that some kind of worth in them will over-balance his evil deeds.” This seems to have been the opinion of the later Jews, who lay it down for a rule in their Mishna, that all Israel shall have a share in the blessed world to come: and is it not too much to be feared, that many of those who profess Christianity, embrace this dangerous and absurd opinion?

Fuente: Commentary on the Holy Bible by Thomas Coke

Eze 33:13 When I shall say to the righteous, [that] he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

Ver. 13. When I shall say to the righteous. ] See on Eze 18:24 .

If he trust to his own righteousness. ] As thinking that he hath thereby purchased a licence to commit iniquity.

Fuente: John Trapp’s Complete Commentary (Old and New Testaments)

trust = confide. The paragraph comprised in Eze 33:3-9 looks especially to the phase of responsibility of a watchman toward the people under his charge. This verse introduces the special thought of God’s attitude toward the promises of good or threats of evil that have been announced to man. The promises or warnings of the Lord are made on conditions, either expressed or implied. Hence the promise of life made to a good man is not so fixed that he cannot come short of that promise. If he becomes so confident over his former good deeds and record of them that he begins to do wrong, the promise of life will be revoked. This overthrows the doctrine titled “Once in grace always in grace,” for man’s favor with God depends on faithfulness to the end.

Fuente: Combined Bible Commentary

Eze 33:13. It is evidently signified here, that to trust in our own righteousness, whether internal or external, whether graces or virtues, past or present, or to entertain high thoughts of our own attainments in religion, and to put confidence therein, is one step toward a fall, and generally issues in apostacy.

Fuente: Joseph Bensons Commentary on the Old and New Testaments

When I shall say to the righteous, [that] he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. 13.
