The last words of the Book are, &ldquo;The Lord is there.&rdquo; The phrase <em> with<\/em> them, i.e. by or beside them (cf. <span class='bible'>Eze 2:6<\/span>), might mean <em> over<\/em> them, reference being to the situation of the temple, high above the city (<span class='bible'>Eze 40:2<\/span>), but this has little probability. It would be more natural to take <em> over<\/em> in the ideal sense of a &ldquo;protection&rdquo; to them. The sanctuary, however, does not protect, it sanctifies, although being sanctified Jehovah will protect them (ch. 38 39). This promise of a sanctuary in the midst of them <em>for evermore<\/em> was in type and shadow set before the eyes of the people with the restoration of the Temple of Zerubbabel; but in its reality began to be fulfilled at the incarnation of the Son of God, of whom it is said by St. John (<span class='bible'>Joh. 1:14<\/span>) that He dwelt (literally, <em>tabernacled<\/em>) among us, and is continued by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of believers (<span class='bible'>1Co. 3:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co. 6:19<\/span>); while it is to receive its final consummation in that future when the tabernacle of God shall be with men, and the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of the heavenly Jerusalem (<span class='bible'>Rev. 21:3-22<\/span>).
