The Hebrew regarded the blood as the seat of the &lsquo;soul,&rsquo; or principle of life; and it was in virtue of the &lsquo;soul&rsquo; that was in it, that it made atonement (see <span class='bible'>Lev 17:11<\/span>). By its application to the horns of the altar (cf. <span class='bible'>Lev 4:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:30<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:34<\/span>), as in other cases to those of the altar of incense, or to the mercy-seat (<span class='bible'>Lev 4:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 16:14-15<\/span>), it was brought near to Jehovah.<\/p>\n<p><em> upon the horns<\/em> (<span class='bible'>Exo 27:2<\/span>) <em> of the altar<\/em> ] i.e. of the altar of burnt-offering (<span class='bible'>Exo 27:1<\/span> ff.), exactly as in the cases of the sin-offering for laymen specified in <span class='bible'>Lev 4:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:30<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:34<\/span> (contrast <span class='bible'>Exo 29:6<\/span> f., <span class='bible'>Exo 29:17<\/span> f.): the priests, before their consecration is completed, are treated as laity.<\/p>\n<p><em> at the base of the altar<\/em> ] as in the ordinary sin-offering, <span class='bible'>Lev 4:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:30<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 4:34<\/span>; cf. <span class='bible'>Lev 5:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 8:15<\/span> (the parallel to the present passage), <span class='bible'>Exo 9:9<\/span>. The &lsquo;base&rsquo; (lit. <em> foundation<\/em>) of the altar is mentioned only in these passages. Being slain, and its blood received into a basin:<\/p>\n<p><strong>and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger<\/strong>; not sprinkle it with hyssop, as was done in some cases, but put on with the finger dipped into the blood in the basin; as the horns of the altar were the place where the sacrifice was bound, as some think, or however where persons in distress fled for refuge, and laid hold on, it may figure the blood of Christ, being effectual to the cleansing of their souls, and the remission of their sins, through the application of it to them by the Spirit of God:<\/p>\n<p><strong>and pour all the blood beside at the bottom of the altar<\/strong>; the rest of the blood not put upon the horns of the altar, all that was left of it.
