The Sadducees posed as men of superior intelligence and knowledge in opposition to the traditionalists among the Pharisees with their oral law. And yet on this very point they were ignorant of the Scriptures. He says, in effect: Don&#8217;t you see how absolutely foolish you are in your belief and in your discussion? The point of your story is based upon a wrong supposition. Two grave facts must be noted against the Sadducees and all that follow them in similar arguments: They do not know the Scriptures; they do not know the power of God. Most of the most rabid and radical enemies of the Bible-truths have never even read the Bible, and yet they presume to judge it in the minutest details. And they have no conception of the great power of God; their finite minds cannot grasp infinity, and yet they make futile attempts to make matters beyond their ken clear to themselves and to others by theories that are subject to change without notice. Marrying and giving in marriage will no longer be practiced in heaven, after the resurrection. All physical needs will then be ended definitely, and all the believers in bliss will be sexless. The terms male and female, husband and wife, will no longer be in use, because there will be no need of them. The loved ones will be in heaven, not in the former relation of blood, but in the closer, happier relation of spirit, in union with Christ the Savior. But Jesus gives the Sadducees a lesson also concerning the resurrection of the dead. Since they rejected all the Old Testament writings but the five books of Moses, He takes His proof from one of these, from <span class='bible'>Exo 3:6-15<\/span>. In speaking to Moses at the burning bush, God expressly called Himself the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob. All of these patriarchs, at this time, had died, and they were presumably dead, so far as men could see and judge. But, Jesus explains to the Sadducees, the fact that God so designates Himself, shows that these men, though dead in body, were yet alive, that their soul, the most essential part of them, was alive. The living God is the God of the living only, His work concerns the living only. This is true of all believers. All, to whom the Lord is God, live unto God, even when they have closed their eyes in temporal death. Death, to them, is only a temporary sleep, in the midst of which God considers them as living. The Church must not expect to fare better than its Master, and to-day questions are raised which it is not always easy to answer.<\/p>\n<p>I. The unfairness of the question.The question propounded by the Sadducees is a striking illustration of unfairness. The case was a supposed and not a real one. On the face of it there is the strongest appearance of improbability. The chances against such a case occurring in reality are almost infinite. When we are assailed in argument we must endeavour, as far as we can, to make our discussion turn on the great plain facts and evidences of Christianity, and be on our guard against unfairness and dishonesty in argument.<\/p>\n<p>II. Ignorance of the Scriptures.Much of religious error may be traced to ignorance of the Bible. Our Lords words in reply to the Sadducees declare this plainly. The truth of the principle here laid down is proved by facts in almost every age of Church history. The parishes in our land where there is most true religion are those in which the Bible is most studied. The godliest families are Bible-reading families. The holiest men and women are Bible-reading people.<\/p>\n<p>III. After the Resurrection.This incident tells us how different will be the state of things after the resurrection from the state in which we live now. The risen saint will be completely freed from everything which is now an evidence of weakness and infirmity. There shall be nothing like Mahomets gross and sensual Paradise in the Christians future existence. Hunger and thirst being no more, there shall be no need of food. Enjoying the full presence of God and His Christ, men and women shall no more need the marriage union in order to help one another. Clothed in a glorious body, they shall be as the angels which are in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Illustration<\/p>\n<p>As to the text, I am the God of Abraham, etc., being a convincing proof of the resurrection of the body, there is a passage in Bishop Pearson which is worth reading. He says of this text, as quoted by our Lord, With the force of this argument the multitude was astonished, and the Sadducees silenced. For under the name of God was understood a great benefactor, a God of promise; and to be their God, was to bless them and reward them; as in them to be His servants, and His people was to believe in Him and obey Him. Now Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had not received the promise which they expected: and therefore God, after their death, desiring still to be called their God, He thereby acknowledgeth that he had a blessing and a reward for them still, and consequently that He will raise them to another life, in which they may receive it. So that the argument of our Saviour is the same which the Jews have drawn from another place of Moses (Exo 6:3-4), I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob by the name of God Almighty: but by My name Jehovah was I not made known to them. Nevertheless I have established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan. Furthermore they did not realize that God&rsquo;s power was sufficient to raise people and to raise them to a different type of life. Marriage as we know it will not exist when we have immortal bodies, and deathless existence will not require propagation of the human race. The Sadducees denied the existence of the angelic race (Act 23:8), which belief Jesus also corrected. They considered their views enlightened, but Jesus said they needed enlightening.
