Evidently the witnesses misunderstood Jesus&rsquo; statements about the destruction of the temple (Gr. <span style=\"font-style:italic\">naos<\/span>, temple building) of His body (Joh 2:19) and the future destruction of the Jerusalem temple (Mar 13:2). Anyone who destroyed a temple in the ancient world was subject to capital punishment (cf. Jer 26:1-19).<span style=\"color:#808080\"> [Note: Josephus, Antiquities of . . ., 10:6:2.] <\/span> This was evidently one of the most serious charges against Jesus (cf.
