But dangerous as was the charge, it broke down. The statements of the witnesses did not tally, and their testimony was therefore worthless. Their memories had travelled over three years to the occasion of the first Passover at Jerusalem and the first cleansing of the Temple. But they perverted the real facts of the case (<span class='bible'>Joh 2:18-22<\/span>). St Mark alone notices the disagreement of their testimony. &ldquo;The differences between the recorded words of our Lord and the reports of the witnesses are striking: &lsquo; <em> I can destroy<\/em> &rsquo; (<span class='bible'>Mat 26:61<\/span>); &lsquo; <em> I will destroy<\/em> &rsquo; (<span class='bible'>Mar 14:58<\/span>); as compared with &lsquo; <em> Destroy  and I will raise<\/em> &rsquo; (<span class='bible'>Joh 2:19<\/span>).&rdquo; Westcott&rsquo;s <em> Introduction<\/em>, p. 326 n.<\/p>\n<h4 align='right'><i><b>Fuente: The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges<\/b><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><P><B>59. But neither so did their witnessagree together<\/B>that is, not even as to so brief a speech,consisting of but a few words, was there such a concurrence in theirmode of reporting it as to make out a decent case.
