This is the accommodation of the above parables, or proverbial sentences; suggesting, that Satan must be against himself, if what the Pharisees said was true; and consequently, his kingdom and government, could not long subsist:<\/p>\n because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub<\/strong>; which is all one as to say, that Satan is divided against himself, which is not reasonable to suppose; [See comments on Mt 12:26]<\/span> and<\/p>\n [See comments on Mr 3:26]<\/span>.<\/p>\n Because ye say <\/B> ( <\/SPAN><\/span>). Jesus here repeats in indirect discourse (accusative and infinitive) the charge made against him in verse 15<\/span>. Then you mix it with a falsehood, as follows:<\/p>\n 4) “That I cast out devils through Beelzebub.” <\/strong>(en Beelzeboul ekballein me ta daimonia) “That I expel demons by the power (dynamic) of Beelzebub;” See? Luk 11:15<\/span>; Mat 12:24<\/span>; Mar 3:22<\/span>.<\/p>\n The bitterest enemies of Jesus could not deny that He performed miracles, Mat 12:23<\/span>; Joh 3:2<\/span>. They had no answer to His power, rejecting Him as the Son of God, except to attribute it to the devil, See? Joh 5:39<\/span>; Joh 8:24<\/span>; Joh 20:30-31<\/span>.<\/p>\n “And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingship stand? Because you say that I cast out demons by Beelzeboul.”<\/p>\n It would indeed mean that Satan was divided against himself, faction warring with faction. How then could his kingship hope to survive? And this was because they said that He cast out demons by Beelzeboul, and was thus demonstrating that he was on Beelzeboul’s side against other demons.<\/p>\n 18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n Ver. 18. See on Mat 12:26-30. By (literally in, i.e., in the use of) the finger of God (Luk 11:20). This is the same as: in the spirit of God (Matthew), the one expression explaining the other. His use of the power (finger) of God was a proof that He worked in union with the Spirit of God, and vice versa.<\/p>\n A stronger than he (Luk 11:22). This term is not used by Matthew, but implied in his account. The stronger One is Christ, who had come into the world, and was spoiling Satan by means of these very miracles at which they blasphemed.
