Comp. <span class='bible'>Heb 11:37<\/span> (the legendary martyrdom of Isaiah)<\/p>\n<p> and Susannah 55-59. Hence Bengel says &ldquo;Qui cor <em> divisum habet, dividetur<\/em>.&rdquo; But because of the following clause, which evidently refers to a <em> living<\/em> person, it is thought that <em> dichotomesei<\/em> must here be used in the sense of &ldquo;shall <em> scourge<\/em> &rdquo; (compare the next verse), although there is no other instance of such a sense.<\/p>\n<p><em> with the unbelievers<\/em> ] Rather, <strong> with the faithless<\/strong>. Persons who had the light and knowledge of God&#8217;s word, but made an improper use of the privileges they received. The persons mentioned here differ widely from <I>unbelievers<\/I> or <I>infidels<\/I>, viz. those who were in a state of <I>heathenism<\/I>, because they had not the revelation of the Most High: the latter knew not the will of God, <span class='bible'>Lu 12:48<\/span>, and, though they acted against it, did not do it in obstinacy; the former knew that will, and daringly opposed it. An old and somewhat rare word from <span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span> and that from <span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span> and <span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span>, to cut, to cut in two. Used literally here. In the N.T. only here and <span class='bible'>Mt 24:51<\/span>.<\/P> <P><B>With the unfaithful <\/B> (<span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\">  <\/SPAN><\/span>). Not here &#8220;the unbelieving&#8221; though that is a common meaning of <span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span> (<span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span> privative and <span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span>, from <span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span>), but the unreliable, the untrustworthy. Here <span class='bible'>Mt 24:51<\/span> has &#8220;with the hypocrites,&#8221; the same point. The parallel with <span class='bible'>Mt 24:43-51<\/span> ends here. <span class='bible'>Mt 24:51<\/span> adds the saying about the wailing and the gnashing of teeth. Clearly there Luke places the parable of the wise steward in this context while Matthew has it in the great eschatological discourse. Once again we must either think that Jesus repeated the parable or that one of the writers has misplaced it. And when suddenly his lord does come he is caught out with nowhere to hide. And his lord is so angry that he has him decapitated, and sends him to join the unbelieving. He has proved himself to be totally unworthy to even be in the household.<\/p>\n<p> An alternative is that the verb &lsquo;decapitated&rsquo; be given a gentler meaning of being &lsquo;separated off&rsquo; from the other servants.
