Hence Tremellius renders this place, and the vessels of the shew-bread<\/I>. <\/P> Object<\/B>. All the vessels<\/I> of the table are mentioned before, of which this was one. <\/P> Answ<\/B>. It is not unusual after a general expression comprehending all distinctly to name one eminent member of that kind, such as this unquestionably was, the table being made principally for this use. Thus Mar 16:7<\/span>, Tell my disciples and Peter<\/I>. Like examples are in 2Sa 2:30<\/span>; 1Ki 11:1<\/span>; Psa 18:1<\/span>; Act 11:4<\/span>, and in other authors. And for the particle vau<\/I>, and, which may seem to imply that these were things of another kind, and not any vessels of the table, that is oft put for especially, as Jos 2:1<\/span>; Mar 16:7<\/span>, and so only notes an eminent thing of the same kind, as hath been said. <\/P> Answ. 2<\/B>. Though God did not prescribe the making of the shew-bread, yet he mentions it, together with the table, Exo 25:30<\/span>, and therefore it is conveniently mentioned with the table in this place also, where Moses, to show his exactness and fidelity, doth punctually repeat the same things to the people which he had received in command from God. In like manner the oil, which fed the light of the lamps, is mentioned here in the next verse, because the lighting of the lamps<\/I> was prescribed, Exo 25:37<\/span>. <\/P> <\/p>\n The table and his staves, and all his vessels<\/strong>,…. The table of shewbread, and all things appertaining to it:<\/p>\n and the shewbread<\/strong>; which is mentioned for the sake of the table, and to show what was intended, and the use of it; for otherwise the shewbread was not yet to be made, nor by the artificers here called together; and is to be interpreted of the dishes of the shewbread, in which it was put; and so Junius and Tremellius render it, the instruments or vessels of the shewbread; of these see<\/p>\n Ex 25:23<\/span>.<\/p>\n Exo 35:13<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>And the shew-bread<\/em><\/strong><\/strong> i.e. (By an ellipsis frequent in the Hebrew language) the plates, <\/em>or patens, <\/em>for the shew-bread. The Hebrews often mention the thing contained for that in which it is contained. <\/p>\n REFLECTIONS.<\/strong>God now condescending to dwell among them, the tabernacle is to be erected. Moses delivers all his orders, and is particular on this head. With all convenient speed they must begin; yet, though the work be urgent, the sabbath must not be infringed on pain of death: they may not so much as kindle a fire for any servile work. The sabbath is a day of sacred rest, and to be employed wholly with and for God. The tabernacle is to be built by voluntary contribution: God will be served, not by force, but by choice; and they who love the God of the tabernacle will delight to honour him with their best, and be happy to employ their wealth to so blessed a purpose. He has no part among the true Israel, who has a niggard heart in God’s service. The wisest must be selected for the work; it is not every man that is fit for it. It is the shame of many, that when their children are fit for nothing else, they thrust them into the ministry, and count that shining talents should have a more gainful employment.
