Hence the &lsquo;boldly&rsquo; ( <em> tolmesas<\/em>) of <span class='bible'>Mar 15:43<\/span>. Pilate seems to have granted the boon without a bribe because the Jewish care for burial was well known (<span class='bible'>Mat 14:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 8:2<\/span>; Jos. <em> B. J.<\/em> iv. 5,  2), and was indeed a part of their Law (<span class='bible'>Deu 21:23<\/span>). He had not been able to save Him from ignominy in life. He would do so now that He was dead. It was quite normal for families to ask for the return of the bodies of condemned relatives. But by his act Joseph, who was not a relative, was identifying himself with Jesus.
