Comp. <span class='bible'>Mar 14:51<\/span>. Two other words, <em> othonia<\/em> (<span class='bible'>Joh 19:40<\/span>) and <em> soudarion<\/em> (<span class='bible'>Joh 20:7<\/span>), are used of the various cerements of Jesus. That Joseph bought this <em> sindon,<\/em> apparently on this day (<span class='bible'>Mar 15:46<\/span>), is one of the many incidental signs furnished even by the Synoptists that the true Passover did not begin till the <em> evening<\/em> of the Friday on which our Lord was crucified. On the part taken by Nicodemus in the entombment, and the spices which he brought, see <span class='bible'>Joh 19:39-40<\/span>. Both Joseph and Nicodemus in acting thus not only shewed great courage, but also great self-sacrifice; for the touching of a corpse made them ceremonially unclean, and thus prevented them from any share in the Paschal Feast.<\/p>\n<p><em> in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone<\/em> ] This rock-hewn tomb (Matt., Mk., comp. <span class='bible'>Isa 22:16<\/span>) was in a garden (comp. Jos. <em> Antt.<\/em> ix. 10,  4; x. 3,  2) adjoining the scene of the crucifixion, if not an actual part of it. <span class='bible'>Joh 19:41<\/span>. &ldquo;He made His grave with the rich,&rdquo; <span class='bible'>Isa 53:9<\/span>. In the LXX and here only in the N.T. Nowhere else so far as known. Triple negative and periphrastic past perfect passive in sense (<span class='_800000'><SPAN LANG=\"el-GR\"><\/SPAN><\/span>), though periphrastic imperfect passive in form. It is possible that he actually took part himself in order to honour Jesus now that He was dead, or the main task may have been left to his servants under his supervision. But either way it was undoubtedly his tomb, cut out in preparation for his own burial. That His body was first anointed in accordance with the usual practise comes out in <span class='bible'>Joh 19:39-40<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;Where never man had yet lain.&rsquo; This is a clear indication that in Luke&rsquo;s eyes Jesus&rsquo; death was seen as a kind of offering. The use of what was totally unused, which is emphasised here, indicated something that was for the use in connection with what was supremely holy to God. We can compare the colt that took Jesus up towards the Temple (<span class='bible'>Luk 19:30<\/span>). Now as to one that was condemned to death by the magistrate,  they had an opinion that by how much the more disgracefully they dealt with him,  by so much the greater atonement was made for him.  Hence that expression,  &#8220;They did not openly bewail him;  that that very setting him at nought&#8221;  (no man lamenting him)  &#8220;might redound to his atonement.&#8221;  And from thence,  perhaps,  if the women at Jerusalem had bewailed any other person as they bewailed our Saviour,  that other person might have said,  &#8220;Ye daughters of Jerusalem,  weep not for me,  lest ye cut short my atonement&#8221;:  but Christ speaks to them upon a far different account.  And under this notion they wrapped one that had been so executed,  in some ragged,  torn,  old,  dirty windingsheets;  that this disgrace,  being thrown upon him,  might augment his expiation. Isa 53:9). Luke dated his action as late Friday afternoon. The preparation (Gr. <span style=\"font-style:italic\">paraskeue<\/span>) day was the day before the Sabbath, which began at sundown on Friday.
