The whole produce ofthe land was subjected to the tithe tributeit was a yearly rentwhich the Israelites, as tenants, paid to God, the owner of the land,and a thank offering they rendered to Him for the bounties of Hisprovidence. The custom of counting was for the animals to pass through a small opening, and to be counted with the rod as they passed. Every tenth one was to be taken and marked; and not to be chosen (Lev 27:33).
