Thus, readily do the permanent offices of the leaders of the Israelite community spring out of the duties which, under the emergencies of the first year of the Exodus, they had been led, from time to time, to undertake.<\/P> Num 4:32<\/B><\/span><\/P> By name ye shall reckon the instruments – <\/B>Or, assign them to their bearers singly, and by name. These instruments comprised the heavier parts of the tabernacle; and the order seems intended to prevent individual Merarites choosing their own burden, and so throwing more than the proper share on others.<\/P><\/p>\n Under his conduct and direction. But during the journeyings Eleazar,who was next in succession to his father, took the special charge ofthe Kohathites [Nu 4:16<\/span>], whilehis brother Ithamar had the superintendence of the Gershonites andMerarites [Nu 4:33<\/span>].<\/P><\/p>\n This [is] the service of the families of the sons of Gershon<\/strong>,…. Which they should execute when the camp and tabernacle were in motion:<\/p>\n in the tabernacle of the congregation in the court<\/strong>; where they should take up their burdens, or which lie in things respecting the tabernacle; this was the part they were to be employed in, namely, in taking care of the hangings of the tabernacle, c.<\/p>\n and their charge [shall be] under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest<\/strong> the things committed to their care were delivered by him to them, and they were under his inspection and direction.<\/p>\n “ Their charge<\/em> ( mishmereth <\/em>) is in the hand of Ithamar,<\/em> ” i.e., is to be carried out under his superintendence (cf. As the special duties of Eleazar, the eldest son of Aaron, had been already assigned (Num. 4:16<\/span>), so also are those of Ithamar, the younger son.
