It is used of the frankincense burned for the Presence-bread (<span class='bible'>Lev 24:7<\/span>), the meal of the poor man&rsquo;s sin-offering (<span class='bible'>Lev 5:11<\/span> f.), and the meal-offering (here, <span class='bible'>Lev 2:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 2:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 2:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Lev 6:15<\/span>). The burning of the incense or meal in each case was to bring the worshipper before God&rsquo;s memory. Cf. <span class='bible'>Exo 28:29<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em> and afterward<\/em> &amp;c.] Strictly interpreted this is a second draught which the woman is made to take. But a second draught is very improbable. There has apparently been some accidental disarrangement of the text. Furst thinks that it is because the frankincense and oil are not used, it being a memorial of iniquity. The memorial was both objective, bringing the offerer to the remembrance of God, and subjective, bringing God to the remembrance of the sacrifice. The grain offering was seen as directly drawing Yahweh&rsquo;s attention to the situation, and its quality would indicate the decision that had to be made. Was she innocent or not? The woman would know that if she was innocent the offering would act as an atoning sacrifice. If she was guilty it would call on her the wrath of God for a false offering, caused because she had not confessed her guilt. Everything was now left in the hands of Yahweh. <\/p>\n<p><strong> &ldquo;A handful of the grain offering, as its memorial.&rdquo;<\/strong> Compare &lsquo;the grain offering for memorial&rsquo; in <span class='bible'>Num 5:15<\/span>.
