They shall offer . . . eachprince on his day, c.Eastern princes were accustomedanciently, as they are in Persia still on a certain yearly festival,to sit upon their thrones in great state, when the princes andnobles, from all parts of their dominions, appear before them withtributary presents, which form a large proportion of their royalrevenue. And in the offering of all gifts or presents to greatpersonages, every article is presented singly and with ostentatiousdisplay. The tabernacle being the palace of their great King, as wellas the sanctuary of their God, the princes of Israel may be viewed,on the occasion under notice, as presenting their tributaryofferings, and in the same manner of successive detail, which accordswith the immemorial usages of the East. A day was set apart for each,as much for the imposing solemnity and splendor of the ceremony, asfor the prevention of disorder and hurry and it is observable that,in the order of offering, regard was paid to priority not of birth, but of rank and dignity as they were ranked in the campbeginningat the east, proceeding to the south, then to the west, and closingwith the north, according to the course of the sun.

Fuente: Jamieson, Fausset and Brown’s Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

And the Lord said unto Moses,…. It is not easy to determine when these twelve days began. The computation, however, which Bishop Patrick produces from Schachi, seems as reasonable as any other. According to him, the tabernacle being erected on the first day of the first month of the second year after the Exodus, (Exo 40:17.) seven days were spent in the consecration of it and the altar, &c. Exo 29:37. On the eighth day, the consecration of the priests began, which lasted seven days longer; Lev 8:33 then, on the fourteenth day, they kept the passover, and the feast of unleavened bread, (chap. Num 9:1; Num 9:3.) which lasted till the twenty-second. The rest of the month we may suppose to have been spent in delivering the laws mentioned in the Book of Leviticus; after which, on the first day of the second month, began the numbering of the people, (Numbers 1.) which may be supposed to have lasted three days; and then, on the fourth, the Levites were numbered, chap. Num 3:14-15. On the next day, we may suppose they were offered unto God, and given unto the priests. On the sixth day followed their consecration, mentioned chap. Num 8:7. On the seventh, their several charges were parted among them; chap. 4: after which we may suppose the princes to have begun to offer on the eighth day of the second month, which offering lasted twelve days, i.e. till the nineteenth day inclusive; and on the twentieth of this second month, they removed from Sinai to the wilderness of Paran, chap. Num 10:11-12.

Fuente: Commentary on the Holy Bible by Thomas Coke

Num 7:11 And the LORD said unto Moses, They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for the dedicating of the altar.

Ver. 11. For the dedicating of the altar. ] No warrant at all for Popish dedications of altars, churches, religious houses built for superstitious uses, as appears in stories: a as pro remissione et redemptione peccatorum; pro remedio et liberatione animae; pro amore caelestis patriae; pro salute regnorum; in honorem gloriosae virginis, &c.

a Act. and Mon.

Fuente: John Trapp’s Complete Commentary (Old and New Testaments)

said.
