32. if thou go with us . . . whatgoodness the Lord will show unto us, the same will we do unto thee<\/B>Astrong inducement is here held out; but it seems not to have changedthe young man’s purpose, for he departed and settled in his owndistrict. (See on Jud 1:16<\/span> and 1Sa15:6<\/span>).<\/P><\/p>\n And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be<\/strong>,…. This repetition is for the confirmation of it, more strongly assuring him of what follows:<\/p>\n that what goodness the Lord shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee<\/strong>; signifying that whatsoever they enjoyed in the land of Canaan he should have his share with them: the Targum of Jonathan adds,<\/p>\n “in the division of the land;”<\/p>\n Jarchi says, when the land was divided, the fatness of Jericho was given to the sons of Jethro, to Jonadab, the son of Rechab, see Jud 1:16<\/span>; from whence, however, as well as from other places, Jud 4:11<\/span>; it appears that the posterity of this man had a settlement in the land of Canaan, and from his silence it may be thought that he was prevailed upon to go along with Moses; or if he departed into his own country, as he said he would, he returned again; at least some of his children did.<\/p>\n Num 10:32<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>It shall be, if thou go with us, <\/em><\/strong>&c.<\/strong> It seems most probable, from Jdg 1:16<\/span>; Jdg 4:11<\/span> that Moses prevailed with Hobab, and that he settled with the Israelites in the land of Canaan. <\/p>\n REFLECTIONS.<\/strong>Hobab, when Israel was now commanded to advance, is for returning home. Hereupon Moses, his brother-in-law, invites him to go with them. They were going under a gracious promise, and with the protection of a great God, and therefore were sure of success. When we are going to heaven ourselves, it cannot but be a grief to see our friends and relations disposed to go another way; and we shall make it our business and labour to persuade them to cast in their lot with us. Hobab resolves at first not to go; his land and kindred were dear attractives to keep him from the journey. How often have lands, and friends, and relations, prevailed upon the heart to renounce the ways of God and glory, for the momentary enjoyments of a perishing world? Let it not be our case. Moses will not be easily put off. Real love to a man’s soul will make us importunate to gain him. He urges two reasons, both suited to engage him: 1. The use he might be of to them in their encampments, and with his advice. Note; <\/em>(1.) That we have it in our power to serve our neighbour, is a strong argument for doing it. (2.) Though we are under the sure guidance of an all-wise God, it becomes us to use all the means which human prudence suggests. 2. The advantages he might hope for himself.
