Go not up, for the Lord [is] not among you<\/strong>,…. And therefore could not expect success, for victory is of the Lord; the Targum of Jonathan adds,<\/p>\n “the ark, and the tabernacle, and the cloud of glory move not,”<\/p>\n which were a plain indication that the Lord would not go with them, and therefore could not hope to prevail over their enemies and enter the land, but on the contrary might expect to be defeated by them, as follows:<\/p>\n that ye be not smitten before your enemies<\/strong>; of which they would be in great danger should they attempt to go up the hill, and the Lord not with them.<\/p>\n (42) Go not up, for the Lord is not among you.<\/strong>Moses had already received the command which is contained in Num. 14:25<\/span>. He knew, therefore, that the Israelites would not have the guidance of the cloud, the visible token of the Divine presence.<\/p>\n 42<\/strong>. <\/strong> For the Lord is not among you <\/strong> His protecting presence will not shield you. In this invisible presence, symbolized by the shekinah, Moses trusted with unwavering confidence. See Exo 33:15<\/span>. But Israel, alas! did not share his confidence. This warning is prompted by a tender and loving heart, as are all the divine threatenings. They are as a hedge of thorns to keep men from stumbling over the precipice of eternal ruin. “It is not the doing this or that, nor the circumstance of outwardly belonging to Israel, which secures victory over the enemy or possession of the land. It is that Jehovah is among us.
