There being at this time but very few priests, and the profits and privileges belonging to them being many and great, they thought it but fit and reasonable that they, or some of the chief of them, should be admitted to share in their work and advantages. <\/P> <\/p>\n
And he hath brought thee near [to him]<\/strong>,…. To be in his courts, to watch in his house, and wait on his priests, for which an ample provision was made by tithes. Korah is there personally addressed:<\/p>\n and all thy brethren, the sons of Levi, with thee<\/strong>; the whole tribe of them, excepting Aaron and his family, who were advanced to be priests:<\/p>\n and seek ye the priesthood also<\/strong>? the high priesthood, as the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan; this opens the true cause of their discontent and rebellion; they could not be satisfied with being the ministers of the priests, but wanted to be priests themselves, and Korah perhaps to be high priest.<\/p>\n (10) And seek ye the priesthood also?<\/strong>The Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan understand the reference to be to the high priesthood. As the other Levites who belonged to Korahs company sought the priesthood, so Korah may have aimed at the high priesthood.<\/p>\n 10<\/strong>. <\/strong> Seek ye the priesthood also <\/strong> The sacred office will always be attractive to wicked men, not because they wish to draw nigh to God, but because they desire power over their fellow men. Protestantism, having no priest but Jesus Christ, is well guarded against this evil, especially where it is free from prelatical assumption.<\/p>\n Num 16:10 And he hath brought thee near [to him], and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?<\/p>\n Ver. 10. And seek ye the priesthood also.<\/strong> ] Ambition is restless and unsatisfiable; for, like the crocodile, it grows as long as it lives.<\/p>\n Seek ye the priesthood also <\/p>\n The “gainsaying of Korah” was intrusion into the priest’s office (“no man taketh this honour unto himself,”) Heb 5:4. It was an attempt to create a priestly order without the divine authority Heb 5:10.
