As soon as he had finished his discourse, which was addressed to the congregation, and, according to Josephus u, after a long prayer to God, which that writer gives at large; immediately so it was,<\/p>\n<p><strong>that the ground clave asunder that [was] under them<\/strong>; on which they stood, not from any natural cause, as by subterranean volcano, forcibly making their way and bursting the earth, and so getting vent, which has been thought to be the cause of earthquakes; but this was by the immediate hand and almighty power of God, and came to pass just as Moses suggested it would, and as soon as he had uttered his words, which made it the more observable.<\/p>\n<p>u Antiqu. l. 4. c. 3. The earth opened beneath the rebel&#8217;s tents, and swallowed them. The families of Dathan and Abiram disappeared into the earth. Korah and his servants perished in like manner. Only his sons survived, see Nu 26:10, 11.<\/p>\n<p>This awesome judgment terrified the witnesses, and they fled in fear, seeking to escape the same fate.<\/p>\n<p>Fire from the Lord, likely from the Tabernacle, came forth and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who had joined Korah&#8217;s rebellion.<\/p>\n<p>Jude 1:11 refers to the &#8220;gainsaying of Core (Korah),&#8221; as a characteristic of many in the &#8220;last days.&#8221; The term &#8220;gainsaying,&#8221; <strong>antilogai, <\/strong>means &#8220;a speaking against,&#8221; with the primary concept of rebellion. What an answer was it to the whole business! And what a decisive testimony did it afford of the LORD&#8217;S approbation of his servants! But, my soul! pause over the review, and ask thyself whether to thy repeated acts of disobedience and rebellion, if the LORD had caused a similar visitation, thou couldst have justly complained.
