And Moses laid up the rods before the Lord in the tabernacle of witness.<\/strong> In that part of the tabernacle where the testimony or witness was, that is, the law, which was in the ark, over which was the mercy seat, with the cherubim between which Jehovah dwelt, and this was the most holy place; and the rods being laid here, might be said to be laid before the Lord, who, by making a difference in one of those rods from the rest, would decide the controversy about the priesthood, which was the end of their being laid before him.<\/p>\n 7<\/strong>. <\/strong> Witness <\/strong> The Hebrew is the same as that for testimony <\/em> in Num 17:4<\/span>. The reason for choosing this place may have been that no one would suspect the performance of any legerdemain or jugglery in the holy of holies, a sanctuary too awful for any man to enter but the high priest one day in the year. Moses entered on this occasion by express command.<\/p>\n The Rods Are Placed In the Tent of Testimony ( Num 17:7<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> ). <\/p>\n Num 17:7<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n ‘And Moses laid up the rods before Yahweh in the tent of the testimony.’ <\/p>\n The rods were then laid up ‘before Yahweh’ in ‘the Tent of the testimony’. Note the change in name for the Tent. Emphasis is placed here on the fact that the Tent testifies to Yahweh and His covenant. As we have already suggested, this probably meant that they were placed before the veil behind which was the Ark of the covenant of Yahweh, although it may be that Moses uniquely had access into the Holy of Holies itself. <\/p>\n There is somewhat particularly striking in what is said of laying them up before the LORD, meaning a presentation of them; as if to say, LORD, we wait thy determination! The tabernacle of witness is also as striking: for each person of the GODHEAD is the witness, and consequently to each the tabernacle belongs. The FATHER witnessed to the whole of redemption-work at JESUS’S baptism. JESUS himself is expressly called the faithful witness. Rev 1:5<\/span> . And it is the SPIRIT that beareth witness, because the SPIRIT is truth. These are the three that bear record in Heaven: and these three are one. 1Jn 5:7<\/span> .<\/p>\n laid up the rods.
