Or rather &#8220;defiled me&#8221;, as the word is rendered in <span class='bible'>Job 16:15<\/span> by running with him against a wall, and by lying down with him in the dust and dirt, and so the Arabic version renders it,<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;because thou hast rolled me in the dirt;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> the sense of mocking is not easy to be understood, unless it be that it exposed him to be mocked and laughed at by others, by turning aside, and lying down, and being so unruly; but then there were only his servants with him, to whom only he could be exposed in such a manner, which one would think would not have given him so much concern, and put him into such a passion: the word sometimes is used for seeking occasion, and such a sense it may have here, as that it sought an opportunity or occasion to throw him, and so to kill him, or at least to do him harm, see <span class='bible'>Da 6:4<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I would there were a sword in my hand, for now would I kill thee<\/strong>: so enraged was he, and his passion was so great, that he was not at all frightened and amazed to hear the ass speak, though Josephus q represents him as disturbed and astonished at it; but some think, he being used to converse with spirits in the shapes of various creatures, it was no surprise to him to hear it speak.<\/p>\n<p>q Antiqu. l. 4. c. 6. sect. 3.<\/p>\n<h4 align='right'><i><b>Fuente: John Gill&#8217;s Exposition of the Entire Bible<\/b><\/i><\/h4>\n<p> <strong> 29<\/strong>. <strong> <\/strong> <strong> Because thou hast mocked me <\/strong> It has been remarked that there are no evidences of surprise or alarm in Balaam at this wonderful phenomenon, and that his calmness proves that it was not a real speaking by the ass. <em> Argumentum e silentio, <\/em> the argument from silence, is the least cogent of all proofs. The mind is incapable of being swayed by two different emotions at the same time. While anger was dominant terror was in abeyance. Some critics have thought they solved the difficulty, by supposing, that this prophet had embraced the doctrine of the transmigration of souls, which they prove to be very common in the East. See Le Clerc. But could Pythagoras or Plato themselves, who were such great promoters of that doctrine, have heard, without astonishment, an ass speaking like a man? The conciseness of Moses&#8217; narration certainly supplies us with a better and more solid answer to this objection. He has, without doubt, omitted some circumstances which would entirely have removed it had they been known.
