With the children of Israel, with the heads of them, their chief and principal, to assist in taking the number of the people; as when they were numbered thirty years ago, when a prince out of each tribe was taken to be with Aaron and Moses in doing that business; but those princes were now all dead, and another race succeeded, who were now employed in this service; so the Targum of Jonathan says, they spoke with the rulers, and ordered them to number them:<\/p>\n in the plains of Moab, by Jordan, [near] Jericho<\/strong>: or of Jericho, as the same Targum, on the other side of Jordan to that on which Jericho stood; for as yet the children of Israel had not passed that river, nor entered into the land of Canaan, in which Jericho was, but they were now opposite it; [See comments on Nu 22:1]<\/span>:<\/p>\n saying<\/strong>; as follows.<\/p>\n 3<\/strong>. <\/strong> Plains of Moab <\/strong> Num 22:1<\/span>, note. <\/p>\n Jordan <\/strong> Jos 1:2<\/span>, note and cut. <\/p>\n Jericho <\/strong> Jos 2:1<\/span>, note.<\/p>\n Moses and Eleazar Pass On The Command ( Num 26:3-4<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> )<\/strong>. <\/p>\n Num 26:3<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n ‘And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,’ <\/p>\n In strict obedience Moses and Eleazar passed on the command in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho. The invasion would soon begin. <\/p>\n Num 26:4<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n “<\/strong> Take the sum of the people<\/em>, from twenty years old and upward, as Yahweh commanded Moses and the children of Israel, that came forth out of the land of Egypt.” <\/p>\n There is no opening verb. ‘Take the sum of’ is read in from the previous verses. So the command was given to current Israel to ‘number’ the army in the same way as Yahweh had commanded Moses and the children of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt. This last phrase was a reminder that the previous generation, having been numbered, failed. <\/p>\n Eleazar is joined in commission with Moses in the service; and the method of enumerating them is, as was before appointed, on their coming forth from Egypt at Mount Sinai.
