Unto these the land shall be divided. This must have had great influence towards encouraging believers, when they gave in their names before God, and professed that they were heirs of the land; since it was exactly the same as if they actually had it in their grasp, when God called them to its certain possession; for the demonstrative pronoun is used emphatically, lest they should suppose that they were to be put off any longer, and that what was promised them was still to be kept in store for their posterity. The actual fulfillment, therefore, and immediate presence of the thing is indicated, when God prescribes that the land was to be divided to those who were just numbered, and whose names appeared in the public registers. A proportionable mode of division is then enjoined, so that their share should be distributed to every tribe according to the number of their names. We now perceive that they were registered, and, so to speak, (195) lustrated, in order that they might more earnestly bestir themselves to take possession of the promised land.

  (195) Lat., “Quasi lustratos.” Fr. “Comme receus de nouveau;” as it were received anew: — the allusion is, I need hardly say, to the Roman lustrum, or quinquennial census and readjustment of the classes of the people.

Fuente: Calvin’s Complete Commentary

(53-56) Unto these the land shall be divided . . . The general apportionment of the land, as regarded the relative position of each tribe, was to be decided by lot, which was commonly looked upon as the determination of God Himself, and in this instance was undoubtedly so. The extent of territory was to be determined by the number of namesi.e., of personsin each tribe, and each inheritance was to bear the name of the ancestor of the tribe. Rashi says that the names of the twelve tribes were written on twelve scrolls of parchment, and twelve borders, or limits of land, on twelve others, and that they were mixed together in an urn.

Fuente: Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers (Old and New Testaments)

GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR THE ALLOTMENT OF CANAAN, Num 26:51-56.

53, 54. According to the number of names The first principle upon which the tribal allotment must proceed is, that the portion of the tribes must accord with the census returns, the larger tribes receiving the larger shares and the smaller tribes the smaller portions.

Fuente: Whedon’s Commentary on the Old and New Testaments

Gen 12:2, Gen 12:7, Jos 11:23, Jos 14:1, Psa 49:14, Psa 105:44, Eze 47:22, Dan 7:27, Mat 5:5, Rev 5:10, Rev 21:27

Reciprocal: Num 33:54 – ye shall divide Jos 13:7 – General 1Ch 16:18 – inheritance Act 13:19 – he divided

Fuente: The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Num 26:53.
