i.e. Into the tabernacle, where God was pleased to speak with Moses upon occasions, Exo 25:22<\/span>; Num 7:89<\/span>. For it was a hard case; and though their plea seemed reasonable, yet Moses showed his humility and modesty, that he would not determine it himself without Gods particular direction. <\/P> <\/p>\n And Moses brought their cause before the Lord.<\/strong> For it seems it was too difficult for this court to decide; and it devolving upon Moses, as the president of it, and who only could have recourse to God at all times, he carried it to him and consulted with him about it: this, as the Targums of Jonathan and Jerusalem say, was one of the four causes that came before Moses the prophet, that he solved according to the mind of the Lord, which he consulted; one was concerning the blasphemer, Le 24:11<\/span>, the other concerning those defiled by the dead, Nu 9:8<\/span>, the third concerning the sabbath breaker, Nu 15:34<\/span> and the fourth was this; [See comments on Le 24:12]<\/span>.<\/p>\n This question of right ( Mishpat <\/em>) Moses brought before God, and received instructions in reply to give the daughters of Zelophehad an inheritance among the brethren of their father, as they had spoken right. Further instructions were added afterwards in Num 36:1-13<\/span> in relation to the marriage of heiresses.<\/p>\n 5. And Moses brought their cause before the Lord. It is probable either that there was a difference of opinion, or that the minds of the judges were in doubt, as respecting an obscure and uncertain point. At any rate, it was expedient that the law should be laid down by God, lest any future controversy should arise; for, if a sentence had been pronounced by human judgment on the matter before them, the obstinacy of many would not perhaps have been sufficiently set at rest. It is worth while to remark the pious modesty of Moses, who was not ashamed to confess his ignorance, until he had been instructed by the mouth of God. Although he had promulgated the law forty years before, still he was always ready to learn. Besides, there is no doubt but that God impelled him to inquire of Himself, whenever any serious matters were in question, until his doctrine was absolutely perfect. And, although God does not now deliver from heaven what is to be done, nevertheless rulers are reminded that they ought to have recourse to God in points of perplexity, in order that He may instruct them by the Spirit of wisdom; and assuredly they will not be without this, if they ask Him; since he is no less ready to listen to them, than He here shewed Himself to be to Moses. <\/p>\n 5<\/strong>. <\/strong> Moses brought their cause before the Lord <\/strong> This shows the sense of equity which inhered in Moses, and his superiority to the prejudices of his age and nation. In this particular he foreshows the Prophet like unto him, Jesus Christ, who treated woman with the utmost respect. Joh 4:6<\/span>, note. This act of Moses also beautifully demonstrates that distrust of his own moral judgments which every good man feels in the presence of such an infallible authority as the word of God.<\/p>\n The Case Is Brought Before Yahweh ( Num 27:5<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> ). <\/p>\n Num 27:5<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n ‘And Moses brought their cause before Yahweh.’ <\/p>\n Moses clearly acknowledged that they had a case for he brought the matter before Yahweh, probably by entering the inner sanctuary and standing before the veil (compare Num 7:89<\/span>). <\/p>\n What a sweet lesson we ought to draw from hence! Yes, my soul! do thou bring every cause before thy GOD, and never lean upon thine own understanding. See a string of the richest promises to this purpose, by way of encouraging every poor exercised soul.
