Beth-nimrah,now Nimrin Heshbon, now Hesban; Elealeh (Hebrew,<\/I> “thehigh”), now Elaal; Kirjathaim (Hebrew,<\/I> “the doublecity”); Nebo, now Neba, near the mountain of that name;Baal-meon, now Myoun, in ruins, where was a temple of Baal (Jos 13:17<\/span>;Jer 48:23<\/span>); Shibmah, or Shebam(Nu 32:3<\/span>), near Heshbon, famousfor vines (Isa 16:9<\/span>; Isa 16:10<\/span>;Jer 48:32<\/span>).<\/P><\/p>\n And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah.<\/strong> Of these no mention is made elsewhere, except Jaazer, which is the same with Jazer,<\/p>\n Nu 32:3<\/span>.<\/p>\n 35<\/strong>. <\/strong> Atroth, Shophan <\/strong> Modern scholars agree in the opinion that but one place is intended by these two names. The Seventy omit it altogether. It has not yet been identified. <\/p>\n Jaazer <\/strong> Num 32:1<\/span>, note. Jogbehah <\/strong> is mentioned again in Jdg 8:11<\/span>. It is supposed that it was not far from the Jordan, and south of Jebel-Jilad.<\/p>\n The reason of the change of names was most probably to observe that precept, that the children of Israel should not make mention of the names of the gods of the heathen about them; and their cities were called in honour of their gods: see Exo 23:13<\/span> . And hence, in after ages, the LORD promised to take away the names of Baalim out of the mouths of his people.
