The Mission of the Spies<\/p>\n Arrived at the Mt of the Amorite, promised them by God, and exhorted to invade it (Deu 1:20<\/span> f.), the people proposed that spies be sent forward to explore (Deu 1:22<\/span>). Moses consented and took twelve men (Deu 1:23<\/span>), who visited the vale of ’Eshkl and brought back of its fruit, saying the land was good (Deu 1:24<\/span> f.). The parallel passage is Numbers 13<\/span>, for the analysis of which into JE and P see Chapman, Introd. to the Pent.<\/em> (86 ff.), in this series, and cp. Oxf. Hex.<\/em> and G. B. To JE are generally assigned Deu 1:17<\/em><\/span> bc <\/em> Deu 1:21<\/span> a<\/em>, Deu 1:22-24<\/span>, Deu 1:26-29<\/span>: the beginning of this account with the start of the spies from adesh is probably broken off; it is implied in Deu 1:26<\/span>. As it stands all that JE tells us is that the spies started after Israel had reached the wilderness of Paran, Num 12:16<\/span>, while adesh was in the wilderness of Sin to the N. of that of Paran. They were to go up by the Negeb, still intervening between them and the Mt of the Amorite, to see the land, its dwellers, their manner of life, and the fruits. Thus they came to ebron where were sons of ‘Ana and brought back from the vale of ’Eshol some fruit to adesh, reporting the land to be good, but the people strong and their cities fenced and great. It is clear that the deuteronomic review is a summary of this account.
