So JE, <span class='bible'>Num 13:17<\/span>, but it adds <em> through the Negeb<\/em>; see on <span class='bible'><em> Deu 1:20<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em> the valley of Eshcol<\/em> ] LXX   , &lsquo;ravine of the cluster&rsquo;; but Heb. <em> naal<\/em> is the Ar. wdy, a valley with a winter-stream, Gk  , Ital. <em> fiumara<\/em>. Heb. <em> &rsquo;eshkl<\/em> is the Ar. <em> &rsquo;ithkl<\/em> (weakened from <em> &lsquo;ithkl<\/em> with initial &lsquo;ayin), a cluster of dates or palm-branch with clusters, and means a cluster of dates, <span class='bible'>Son 7:8<\/span>, or of grapes as here (dates not ripening so high as ebron). As a place-name Eshkl occurs elsewhere only in P, <span class='bible'>Num 32:9<\/span>; but in <span class='bible'>Gen 14:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gen 14:24<\/span> as the name of a person, the brother of Mamre the morite at ebron. The neighbourhood of ebron is fertile with numerous springs, and the vine flourishes there. Baedeker (5th ed. 134) reports to the N.W. a Wdy Iskhil.
