When the parties were of unequal power the terms were imposed by the stronger. So between God and Israel; <em> His covenant which He commanded<\/em>, here and <span class='bible'>Deu 29:1<\/span>. Used first in a religious sense by JE, <span class='bible'>Gen 15:18<\/span>, etc. of God&rsquo;s covenant with the patriarchs; <span class='bible'>Exo 19:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Exo 24:7<\/span> ff. etc. with Israel at oreb; less used by the prophets, e.g. <span class='bible'>Hos 6:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Hos 8:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jer 11:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jer 31:32<\/span>; but very frequent in <span class='bible'>Deu 4:31<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 7:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 8:18<\/span>, etc., with patriarchs (cp. <span class='bible'>Deu 6:18<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 9:5<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 11:9<\/span>, etc.); <span class='bible'>Deu 4:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 4:23<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 5:2<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 9:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 9:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 9:15<\/span>, at oreb; <span class='bible'>Deu 17:2<\/span> (?), <span class='bible'>Deu 29:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 29:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 29:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 29:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 29:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 29:25<\/span> renewed in Mo&lsquo;ab. The terms <em> commanded<\/em> by God were <em> the words of the covenant<\/em>, J, <span class='bible'>Exo 34:28<\/span>, or <em> the covenant<\/em> alone as here, i.e. the Decalogue, but in <span class='bible'>Deu 29:1<\/span> the whole Deuteronomic Code; <em> book of the covenant<\/em>, E, <span class='bible'>Exo 24:7<\/span>, the oreb legislation, but in <span class='bible'>2Ki 23:2<\/span> f., <span class='bible'>21<\/span>, cp. <span class='bible'>Deu 29:21<\/span>, the Deuteronomic Code. The tables of the Decalogue were <em> the tables of the covenant<\/em>, <span class='bible'>Deu 9:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 9:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 9:15<\/span>; hence D&rsquo;s characteristic name for the Ark, <em> the Ark of the Covenant<\/em>, <span class='bible'>Deu 10:8<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 31:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 31:25<\/span> and in Josh. A covenant was solemnised by a sacrificial feast, <span class='bible'>Gen 21:28<\/span> ff; <span class='bible'>Gen 31:46<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gen 31:54<\/span>. Hence probably the phrase <em> to cut<\/em> or strike a covenant ( <em> karath b<\/em> <em> e<\/em> <em> rth<\/em>), cp.   . Beyond the frequent use of this phrase, e.g. <span class='bible'>Deu 4:23<\/span>, D nowhere associates the covenant with sacrifice. God makes ( <em> karath<\/em>) it and it is <em> His; swears to it; forgets it not, keeps, fulfils<\/em> and <em> establishes it<\/em>, <span class='bible'>Deu 4:31<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 7:12<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Deu 8:18<\/span>, etc.; <em> keeping covenant and true love<\/em>, <span class='bible'>Deu 7:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 7:12<\/span>. Israel <em> enters into it<\/em>, <span class='bible'>Deu 29:12<\/span>, and is bound to <em> keep<\/em> and to <em> do it, passim<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em> the ten commandments<\/em> ] <strong> Words<\/strong>. So also <span class='bible'>Deu 10:4<\/span>. E, <span class='bible'>Exo 20:1<\/span>, <em> all these words<\/em>. A gloss in <span class='bible'>Exo 34:28<\/span> has <em> the ten words<\/em>.
