Which was done much about the same time that the olives were gathered, and both after wheat harvest, about the latter end of June, or beginning of July; for they were more forward in those hot countries:<\/p>\n<p><strong>thou shall not glean [it] afterwards<\/strong>; go over the vines a second time, to pick off every berry or bunch that escaped them at first gathering:<\/p>\n<p><strong>it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow<\/strong>; as the forgotten sheaf, and the olive berries left; these are all supposed to be poor persons, otherwise no doubt there were strangers, and fatherless persons, and widows, in good circumstances; who, as they needed not, so neither would give themselves the trouble, but think it beneath them to go into fields, oliveyards, and vineyards, to gather what was left by the owners. These laws were made in favour of the poor, that mercy and kindness might be showed to them, and that they might have a taste of all the fruits of the earth.<\/p>\n<h4 align='right'><i><b>Fuente: John Gill&#8217;s Exposition of the Entire Bible<\/b><\/i><\/h4>\n<p>NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: Deu 24:21-22<\/p>\n<p> 21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. 22You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.<\/p>\n<p>Deu 24:22 The Israelites were to have compassion on servants and aliens because they once shared this condition in Egypt. God was gracious to them; they, too, should be gracious to others!<\/p>\n<p>Several times in Deuteronomy the call to remember Israel&#8217;s period of enslavement is used to stimulate current action:<\/p>\n<p>1. all in the community to observe the Sabbath, Deu 5:12-15<\/p>\n<p>2. release the Israelite slave on the seventh year, Deu 15:12-18<\/p>\n<p>3. all in the community to participate in the Feast of Weeks, Deu 16:9-17<\/p>\n<p>4. do not pervert justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow&#8217;s garment in pledge, Deu 24:17-18<\/p>\n<p>5. do not reap all the way to the corners of the field and do not do a second reaping, Deu 24:19-22<\/p>\n<p>6. using other words, but with the same emphasis, obedience, Deu 6:10-15; Deu 8:2; Deu 8:18<\/p>\n<p>DISCUSSION QUESTIONS<\/p>\n<p>This is a study guide commentary which means that you are responsible for your own interpretation of the Bible.
