Cursed be he that setteth light by his father. What follows refers to the Second Table of the Law; and, first, He pronounces those cursed who should be undutiful ( impii) to their parents; for the word קלל, kalal, (201) which means to despise, as well as to curse, is put in opposition to the honor which, by the Fifth Commandment, is due to our father and mother. Then He mentions such thefts as generally escape the knowledge of men; as also, He only adverts to those acts of fornication which are anxiously concealed on account of their filthiness. To have connection with a beast, with one’s mother-in-law, or step-mother, or sister, is so unnatural and detestable a crime, that it is generally concealed more carefully. But God admonishes us that, whatever modes of concealment the sinner shall adopt, they will profit him nothing, but that, when He shall at length ascend His judgment-seat, their shame shall be discovered. For the same reason he does not curse all murderers, but only such as have shed innocent blood for hire, which nefarious compact cannot easily be discovered so as to be punished by laws. (202)

 (201) He assumes, what is scarcely tenable, that מקלה is derived from קלל rather than from קלה — W

 (202) “Des hommes.” — Fr.

Fuente: Calvin’s Complete Commentary

THOUGHT QUESTIONS 27:1526

473.

Try to imagine the great attraction of idolatry. But the eyes of Jehovah are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good (Pro. 15:3). He seeth under the whole heaven (Job. 28:24), Cf. 2Ch. 16:9, Pro. 5:21.

HE THAT SETTETH LIGHT BY HIS FATHER OR HIS MOTHER (Deu. 27:16)he who is making light of his father and his mother (Youngs Literal); he who dishonors his father or his mother (R.S.V.); he who insults his father or mother (Torah). Setteth light by is a rendering of the Heb, verb Kalah, which Baumgartners Lexicon defines as treat with contempt. See Lev. 20:9, Eze. 22:7, and our previous discussion under Deu. 21:18-21.

HE THAT REMOVETH HIS NEIGHBORS LANDMARK (Deu. 27:17)See Deu. 19:14, notes.

THAT MAKETH THE BLIND TO WANDER (Deu. 27:18)See also Lev. 19:14. It is difficult to conceive of one so inhumane as to mistreat or deceive the blind, but in our own generation we have witnessed such in the sadistic and cruel treatment of elderly men and women who are robbed, abused or beaten on the streets.

JUSTICE DUE THE SOJOURNER, FATHERLESS, AND WIDOW (Deu. 27:19)Cf. Deu. 1:16-18, Deu. 10:17-18; Deu. 16:19, Deu. 24:17-18, notes: Exo. 22:21-24.

HE THAT LIETH WITH HIS FATHERS WIFE (Deu. 27:20)See Deu. 22:30, notes.

HE THAT LIETH WITH ANY MANNER OF BEAST (Deu. 27:21)See Deu. 23:18, notes. Cf. Exo. 22:19, Lev. 18:23; Lev. 20:15.

HE THAT LIETH WITH HIS SISTER (Deu. 27:22)This curse applies to half sisters as well as full sisters. See Lev. 18:6-18, esp. Lev. 18:9. Also Lev. 20:17.

HE THAT LIETH WITH HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW (Deu. 27:23)See also Lev. 20:14. A careful reading of Leviticus, chapters 18 and 20, will show how God abhorred any kind of incest, adultery, or fornication, under the Mosaic code. And surely this fact is clear from the many condemnations of these sins we have found in this book.

HE THAT SMITETH HIS NEIGHBOR IN SECRET (Deu. 27:24)See Deu. 4:41-43 and especially Deu. 19:1-13, notes. The reference here is obviously to premeditated murder.

HE THAT TAKETH A BRIBE TO SLAY AN INNOCENT PERSON (Deu. 27:25)Compare Deu. 10:17-19, Deu. 16:18-20; Deu. 25:1; Exo. 23:1-3; Exo. 23:6-8.

CURSED BE HE THAT CONFIRMETH NOT THE WORDS OF THIS LAW TO DO THEM (Deu. 27:26)Compare Deu. 26:16-19. Again and again the necessity of doing the words of the law is emphasized. This was a prerequisite of Gods fullest blessing. But this very truth pointed up the need of a Redeemer. The fact that no one (save the Lord Jesus) kept the law completely and perfectly, meant that the law itself served as their condemning agent. Thus Paul affirms, For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them. Now that no man is justified by the law before God, is evident: for The righteous shall live by faith; and the law is not of faith; but, He that doeth them shall live in them. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us . . . If we mark off the first offence specified, secret idolatrythe only one which distinctly recalls the first commandment of the Law, and also the last general curse which embraces all transgression whatever, the intervening offences seem more easily arranged. We have duty to parents enforced (Deu. 27:16) and the rights of neighbours (Deu. 5:17), the blind (Deu. 27:18), and the unprotected (Deu. 27:19) come next. The next four precepts are all concerned with purity, first in the nearer, afterwards in the more distant relations (Deu. 27:20-23). The last two precepts concern slander and treachery (Deu. 27:24-25). Evidently the offences specified are examples of whole classes of actions; and the twelve curses may have some reference to the number of the tribes.

Fuente: Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers (Old and New Testaments)

Deu 27:16 Cursed [be] he that setteth light by his father or his mother.
