Deu 25:19<\/span>, “It shall be, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies<\/em> round about, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it.” Into this “rest” the disobedient did not enter (Num 14:28-30<\/span>; Psa 95:7-11<\/span>; Heb 3:11-18<\/span>), but the true “Rest,” the complete “Sabbath-keeping,” still remaineth for “the people of God” (Heb 4:9<\/span>).<\/p>\n this land<\/em> ] Compare Jos 1:2<\/span> and Deu 3:18<\/span>, the land in which the whole people as yet and the speaker also were, the land east of the Jordan.<\/p>\n Verse 13<\/span>. Those who condemn the two and a half tribes (or the persons whom they suppose to be spiritually represented by them) for not going far enough, should notice that on both sides of Jordan equally there was the rest of God. But this rest is only the first stage of several in Israels history. We find it again in the reign of David (2Sa. 7:1<\/span>), Solomon (1Ch. 22:9<\/span>), Esther (Jos. 9:16-18<\/span>; Jos. 9:22<\/span>), and we must not forget the comment in Hebrews 4<\/span>, obtained from Psalms 95<\/span> : For if Joshua had given them rest, then would He not afterward have spoken of another day. These all received not the promise. There remaineth <\/em>therefore a rest <\/em>to the people of God. The last rest is Sabbatical; the rests that precede it are halting-places on the way.<\/p>\n 13<\/strong>. <\/strong> The Lord hath given you rest <\/strong> He has permitted you to settle your families in fixed abodes on the express condition that you should assist in the subjugation of the land on the western side of Jordan.<\/p>\n Num 32:16-22<\/span>. The promise of these two and a half tribes, solemnly made to Moses, must now be fulfilled. <\/p>\n This land <\/strong> Like the expressions this Jordan <\/em> and this Lebanon, <\/em> (Jos 1:2<\/span>; Jos 1:4<\/span>,) the land immediately around them east of Jordan, in which all Israel was yet encamped.<\/p>\n “<\/strong> Remember the word which Moses, the servant of YHWH, commanded you, saying, ‘YHWH your God gives you rest and will give you this land.’ ” <\/p>\n Joshua reminded them of their promise made. They had been given their ‘rest’, no longer journeying, no longer always on the move.
