It is the modern <em> es-Salt<\/em> on the road from Jericho to Damascus.<\/p>\n<p><em> and Betonim<\/em> ] a town somewhere on the northern boundary of Gad. Its site was unknown to Jerome.<\/p>\n<p><em> and from Mahanaim<\/em> ] in the east, <em> unto Debir<\/em>, on the heights which border the Jordan on the west. Mahanaim (= the <em> two hosts<\/em>) is famous in the history ( <em> a<\/em>) of Jacob&rsquo;s return from Padanaram (<span class='bible'>Gen 32:2<\/span>), ( <em> b<\/em>) of Ishbosheth&rsquo;s reign (<span class='bible'>2Sa 2:8<\/span>), ( <em> c<\/em>) of David&rsquo;s flight from Absalom (<span class='bible'>2Sa 17:24<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Sa 17:27<\/span>). This was their coast from the south to the north, and so describes their eastern border, which reached from Heshbon, given to the tribe of Reuben,<\/p>\n<p> <span class='bible'>Jos 13:7<\/span>; to these places mentioned; Ramathmizpeh, the same with Ramothgilead, which Jerom o says was a village in his time, and lay two miles from Philadelphia or Rabbath before mentioned, to the east; it should be to the west; of Betonim we nowhere else read, it seems to have been near to Ramath:<\/p>\n<p><strong>and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir<\/strong>; the former of these was the place where the angels met Jacob, and who gave it the name from thence; and in later times a city of this name was built there, and was near the river Jabbok, <span class='bible'>Ge 32:2<\/span>; Debir is different from that in the tribe of Judah, <span class='bible'>Jos 15:15<\/span>; in the Septuagint version here it is called Daibon, perhaps the same with Dibon, the tribe of Gad rebuilt, and is called Dibongad, <span class='bible'>Nu 32:34<\/span>; unless Lidbar here should be the same with Lodebar in Gilead, <span class='bible'>2Sa 17:27<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>o De loc. Compare <span class='bible'>Jos 13:17<\/span> and <span class='bible'>Jos 21:39<\/span>, notes. <\/p>\n<p><strong> Ramath-mizpeh <\/strong> Probably identical with <em> Ramoth-gilead <\/em> and <em> Mizpeh of Gilead, <\/em> which was allotted to the Levites and appointed one of the cities of refuge. <span class='bible'>Jos 20:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jos 21:38<\/span>. Most modern scholars are inclined to locate it at the village of <em> es-Salt, <\/em> thirty miles north of Heshbon. &ldquo;This is indicated,&rdquo; says Porter, &ldquo;(1) by its position on the summit of a steep hill; (2) by its old ecclesiastical name, <em> Saltus Hieralicus, <\/em> which appears to point to its original sacerdotal and holy character; (3) by the fact that about two miles to the northwest of es-Salt is the highest peak of the mountain range, still bearing the name <em> Jebel Jilead; <\/em> (4) by the statement of Eusebius that Ramoth-Gilead lay in the fifteenth mile from Philadelphia towards the west, and this is the exact distance of es-Salt from Rabbath-Ammon.&rdquo; From its lofty position and sacred character it became a great sanctuary of the eastern tribes. See <span class='bible'>Jdg 10:17<\/span>, note. <\/p>\n<p><strong> Betonim <\/strong> Probably identical with a ruined village Batneh, marked on the maps of Menke and Van de Velde about five miles west of es-Salt. <\/p>\n<p><strong> Mahanaim <\/strong> The place where Jacob met with the angels of God, and therefore called by a name which signifies a <em> double host <\/em> or <em> camp. <span class='bible'>Gen 32:2<\/span><\/em>, note. It stood on the border between Gad and Manasseh, (<span class='bible'>Jos 13:30<\/span>,) and was assigned to the Levites. Chap. <span class='bible'>Jos 21:38<\/span>. Here after Saul&rsquo;s death Abner made Ishbosheth king, (<span class='bible'>2Sa 2:8<\/span>,) and to this place David fled during the rebellion of Absalom. Its site is yet a matter of uncertainty. Some think it is the modern Mahneh, near Jebel Ajlun; while Porter suggests that it may have stood upon the site now occupied by the ruins of Gerasa. <strong> The border of Debir <\/strong> is utterly unknown.
